Wyndham Championship Preview

The PGA Championship may be over, but the golf season really never ends. This week players head to North Carolina for the Wyndham Championship, with Webb Simpson listed as the favorite. Very few of the top players in the world are in the field, but it is an important event, as it is the last event before the FedExCup Playoffs begin. Simpson is listed as the favorite at odds of +1400, while Henrik Stenson is the second choice at odds of +2200. Let’s look at the odds and predictions for the Wyndham Championship.

Odds Analysis

Webb Simpson +1400

It is hard to not like Simpson this week, as he leads the field in adjusted strokes gained per round at Sedgefield and he finished third in this event last season. The field is weak, so Simpson is a deserving favorite and may actually be a bargain at these odds.

Henrik Stenson +2000

Stenson won this event last year by shooting a record 22-under par. Stenson is definitely capable of putting up low numbers, but he hasn’t been in the best form of late and I am taking a pass on him this week.

Adam Scott +2200

I just can’t see any way that Scott can’t have a letdown after last week’s PGA Championship. He would seem to fit the profile of a winner for this event, but I just can’t take him coming off the PGA loss.

Rafael Cabrera Bello +2500

If you believe in momentum then you have to give RCB a big chance this week. He had a great final round at the PGA and shouldn’t have a letdown, as he was never really in contention. The price is sure tempting at +2500.

Matthew Fitzpatrick +5000

If you want a player who is accurate off the tee and putts well then Fitzpatrick is a good choice. This is the type of course he should do well on, as it doesn’t demand length and rewards accuracy. I think Fitzpatrick is worth a flyer at these big odds.

Bill Haas +9000

I know that Haas isn’t playing his best, but I have to give him a shot simply because this field is weak and he has the second best scoring average on this course of anyone in the field.

Course: Sedgefield Country Club is a par 70 that measures 7,127 yards. It debuted in 1938 and was one of the two original sites for the Greater Greensboro Open. The course has small greens, so precision will be required this week. Greens-in-regulation is always a key statistic and that will be the case again this week. Henrik Stenson holds the 72-hole record of 258 which he shot last year.
