Golden Knights vs. Capitals TV Coverage: NBCSN
Current Form
The Golden Knights had a stink bomb opener in a 5-2 home loss to the Philadelphia Flyers as -175 chalks but did recover in a 2-1 at Minnesota in their second game. Problematic is the suspension to top defenseman Nate Schmidt, who is out until November 18.
Washington exploded out of the gate with a 7-0 spanking of the Boston Bruins. It was the perfect way for the Caps to begin their season at home after raising the Stanley Cup banner in a special pregame ceremony. But in the second game the Capitals took the night off on the back end and were defeated at the Pittsburgh Penguins in a 7-6 overtime thriller.
Team Scoring props
Great cases can be made for both the Golden Knights and Capitals as far as team scoring per period and for the game itself.
One of the most surprising aspects of the Vegas Golden Knights last year was their ability to score despite being a first-year expansion team. One of the most common characteristics of expansion teams is to rely almost completely on defense to survive, while ignoring offense in the process. That was certainly not the case for the Golden Knights as they shocked the hockey world with their aggressive and effective forechecking which propelled them into becoming one of the highest scoring teams in the NHL yet without sacrificing defense.
Washington has always been known as a great offensive hockey team but the Capitals have dramatically improved on the back end in recent years. Much of that was based on the coaching of Barry Trotz, who departed after the Stanley Cup championship for the New York Islanders. New head coach Todd Reirden was a top assistant with Trotz so the transition is expected to be smooth with minimal change.
Goaltenders
Marc Andre Fleury of the Golden Knights had a terrible opening night in which he allowed five goals on 16 shots but rebounded with a strong performance at Minnesota in which he stopped 29 out of 30 shots.
Braden Holtby has had a similar experience to Fleury in that he had a strong opening performance in which he stopped all 25 shots against Boston before getting shelled for seven goals against on 41 shots in the loss at Pittsburgh.
Top Scorers
Obviously, Washington left wing Alex Ovechkin of the Capitals is a natural choice for props to score at least a point in the game. Ovechkin already has three points in his first two games.
But the man with the hot hand for the Caps is TJ Oshie. The Washington right wing has three goals with two assists in just two games.
A man due to break out for the Golden Knights is center William Karlsson, who was scoreless after two games. Last year Karlsson had 43 goals and 35 assists for Vegas.
Free NHL Props Odds Pick
Neither team should be shut out in this game. And Karlsson makes for an excellent pick to tally at least one point.
NHL Score Prediction: Both teams to score at least one point and for William Karlsson to score.
