NHL Odds - Rangers at Red Wings Game Preview

2017-NHL-Rangers-at-Red-Wings-(NBC)-Betting-Odds

The New York Rangers are favored at the Detroit Red Wings on Sunday night on NBCSN. The Rangers are battling for second place in the Metropolitan Division, while the Red Wings are essentially out of playoff contention. New York has been an excellent road team this season while Detroit has been rotten at home, so bettors should be backing the Rangers in this contest. New York has won six of the last ten in this series.

Don't miss the ice action from Joe Louis Arena at 7 p.m. ET on Sunday, March 12, 2017. Catch every moment of the game live on NBCSN.

We'll have NHL odds at BookMaker.eu available for this and every game on the NHL Sunday schedule.

Odds Analysis

This is the last game of a four-game road trip for the Rangers but it is not a bad spot for New York, as they had two days off after playing in Carolina on Thursday. The Rangers were 24-8 in their first 32 road games with 17 games going over, 14 going under with one push.

The Rangers have been a good team under head coach Alain Vigneault but they have yet to get over the hump in his tenure. It won’t be easy to get to the Stanley Cup Finals, as New York will have to get past Pittsburgh and Washington who are in front of them in the Metropolitan Division.

The Red Wings were home against Chicago on Friday and then they had Saturday off. The Red Wings were 12-19 in their first 31 home games with 12 games going over, 16 going under with three pushes.

Detroit’s long streak of making the playoffs is going to come to an end this season as the Red Wings are well back of Toronto for the last Wild Card spot. The Red Wings lost to Toronto on Tuesday and that defeat probably ended any longshot chance that Detroit had. The Red Wings simply don’t have enough talent, as they are relying on Henrik Zetterberg who is 36 years old. Zetterberg leads the team in points and assists. They have lost 21 games this season by one goal, the most in the NHL.

Special Teams

The Rangers are scoring plenty of goals, as they are 4th in the league at 3.2 per contest, but their power play hasn’t been that great at 17.4% which is 21st in the league. The Rangers are 12th in penalty killing at 81.8% and New York is giving up 2.6 goals per game, which is 10th in the league.

Detroit is awful on the power play, as they rank last in the league at 12.8%. Detroit is scoring just 2.4 goals per game, which is 26th in the league. The Red Wings are 13th in penalty killing at 81.2%. They are 26th in the league in goals allowed at three per contest.

Goalie Report

The Rangers have been getting excellent goaltending of late from Henrik Lundqvist who is 30-19 on the season with a 2.65 goals against average. New York also has a very good backup in Antti Raanta who is 13-5 with a 2.22 goals against average.

The Red Wings would be happy to have just one good goaltender. Jimmy Howard has been out due to injury since early in the year, which has meant a mess in goal with Petr Mrazek and Jared Coreau. Mrazek is 15-25 with a 2.98 goals against average while Coreau is 5-6 with a 3.27 goals against average.

Free NHL Picks

These teams have met twice this season with Detroit winning 2-1 in New York, while the Rangers won 1-0 in Detroit. Five of the last seven meetings have gone under the total. New York has traditionally struggled in Detroit, as they have lost 8 of the last 10 but they did win earlier this season at Joe Louis Arena.

There is nothing to like about the Red Wings, especially when they are playing at home. New York has been excellent on the road this season and they should come away with the win.

NHL Odds: Rangers 4, Red Wings 1
