On the whole, there could be an element of gambling karma taking place in the series between the Vegas Golden Knights and Montreal Canadiens. When Vegas opened as an absurd -550 favorite to win the series, it was as if gamblers were defying Hermes himself. And Hermes doesn’t seem amused. Vegas faces elimination on Thursday night at Montreal. What is most shocking is that the Canadiens are doing to the Golden Knights what the Golden Knights did to the Colorado Avalanche in the previous round. Montreal is rendering Vegas helpless.

Odds Analysis
On the whole, it’s amazing that Vegas is favored for Game 6 after being dominated in a 4-1 Game 5 loss at home to the Canadiens. Shockingly to the gambling masses, Montreal leads this best of seven series 3-2 and can clinch a berth in the Stanley Cup Final for the first time since 1993 with a win Thursday night.
While it is completely understandable why the Golden Knights were a strong favorite entering this series, the price of -550 has been verified as pure folly. Montreal boasts goaltender Carey Price, who can steal games like few other netminders. Furthermore, Vegas is being exposed for what everyone either deliberately ignored or didn’t want to know. The Golden Knights are not strong down the middle. Vegas makes a lot of analytics geeks drool with their puck possession numbers. But the Golden Knights often struggle to finish. Gamblers didn’t care, and now they are scrambling to avoid a -550 loss on the series. Montreal remains the better value as a proven and capable underdog at home.
Vegas Golden Knights
Vegas is reeling with three losses in the last four games in this series. While the Golden Knights have gone over the total in only one of their previous seven games. Vegas ranks 4th best in the NHL Playoffs for fewest goals against and 5th for goal scoring. Of major concern is a power play that has utterly flopped. Vegas ranks dead last in the 2021 Stanley Cup Playoffs for power play efficiency. So too do the Golden Knights rank 12th in the postseason for penalty killing. Special teams are proving to be a dagger to Vegas in this series.
Vegas head coach Pete DeBoer has a tough decision to make for the starting goaltender in Game 6. Marc Andre Fleury was the backbone of the team until this series. However, he’s lost his last two starts. And his Game 3 blunder will go down as one of the biggest in NHL Playoff history. Robin Lehner was stout in Game 4 and is likely to get the call Thursday night.
Montreal Canadiens
Montreal ranks 3rd in the 2021 NHL Playoffs for fewest goals allowed but 11th for goals scored. However, the Canadiens get opportunistic and timely goals that prove to be enough with Price in goal. Montreal ranks 8th in the postseason for power play efficiency. First, in the 2021 Stanley Cup Playoffs for penalty killing is proof that Montreal is suffocating the opposition.
Goaltender Carey Price boasts a dominant save percentage of .933 with a 2.02 goals against average. Rookie and 2021 Hobey Baker Award winner Cole Caufield brings speed and skill previously lacking for the Canadiens. In sum, the Wisconsin Badger product has three goals and five assists with rapid improvement.
