It will be interesting to see how much action we see prior to the trade deadline in 10 days. There have already been a handful of trades that should be meaningful this postseason as Toronto got tougher with the acquisition of Ryan O’Reilly from the St. Louis Blues, and the New York Rangers picked up defensive forward Tyler Motte. We are still likely to see a flurry of action though as teams fine tune their rosters for the postseason grind.

Edmonton Oilers at Pittsburgh Penguins
It’s been incredible to watch the Edmonton Oilers this season. Connor McDavid already has 102 points in just 57 games, and he has 20 more points than anyone else in the NHL. McDavid is one of two players with more than 40 goals already, as he continues to show why he is the best player in the game today. Teammate Leon Draisaitl has the second-most points in the NHL with 82 points, but Edmonton is in fourth place in the Pacific Division behind the Vegas Golden Knights, Los Angeles Kings, and Seattle Kraken.
Edmonton has not been good at home. The Oilers are just 13-11-5 in northern Alberta this season, but they have been one of the top road teams in the conference with a 17-8-3 record outside of Edmonton. They don’t have quality blue liners, and they have struggled to find a quality goaltender despite the presence of McDavid making them Stanley Cup contenders. The front office thought that Jack Campbell might have a bounceback season, but he has instead gotten worse with a 3.39 GAA and an .887 save percentage.
Sidney Crosby was the NHL’s last great young superstar. It took some time for the Pittsburgh Penguins to put a winner around him, but the Pens won a title by the end of his fourth season. They eventually won two more titles with Crosby as the star of the team, but that took more than a decade to accomplish.
Pittsburgh might miss out on the postseason though. The Penguins have a goal differential of +2, and they would be the ninth team in the Eastern Conference if the season ended today. They did return Tristian Jarry which was important since Casey DeSmith has not played well in his stead. However, Jarry looked rusty in his return against the New York Islanders, so Edmonton is likely to get the win here.
Nashville Predators at San Jose Sharks
The big question for the San Jose Sharks is whether or not they trade Erik Karlsson. Edmonton is reportedly very interested in the two-way defender as Karlsson is having a strong season. San Jose has already been eliminated from the postseason, so Karlsson could be on the move, and he has a team-high 76 points. No one else on the Sharks has more than 52 points, highlighting his value.
If Karlsson was traded, the Sharks would be in dismal shape the rest of the way. Timo Meier has 31 goals and 52 points, but only one other person has more than 15 goals, and that’s Logan Couture with 20 goals. The goaltending has been abysmal too with the team combining to post a 3.59 GAA and a .892 save percentage as both James Reimer and Kaapo Kahkonen have struggled.
Nashville is attempting to make a late postseason push as the Predators have played fewer games than any other team in the West. They are offensively challenged, but this is one of the best defenses year in and year out. Juuse Saros has been decent in net, yet they can’t get reliable scoring. No one on this team has 20 goals or 50 points, and the best offensive weapon is defenseman Roman Josi. The Preds should still be able to get the job done here though.
