Women’s bantamweight and featherweight champion Amanda Nunes (19-4, 13 KOs, 3 SUBs) will defend the 145-pound title against Felicia Spencer (8-1, 2 KOs, 4 SUBs) at UFC 250 on Saturday, June 6, 2020 at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada.
There are major tradeoffs to make when an individual achieves fighting greatness. Amanda Nunes is the first women’s double champ in UFC history and you could make a solid argument that she’s the women’s MMA GOAT. The Brazilian retired Ronda Rousey and Miesha Tate. She’s the only fighter to have beaten women’s flyweight champ Valentina Shevchenko. Most impressively, Lioness ended Cris Cyborg’s reign of terror to snatch the featherweight title.
It’s not often we see an athlete achieve such dominance in a sport. Unfortunately, in the sport of fighting it means that we’re likely to see a lot of lopsided matches. Right now, Nunes is operating at a level where she’s way ahead of the pack - nobody out there really sticks out as a legitimate threat. It’s the same territory that fighters like Jon Jones, Demetrious Johnson and GSP reached as champions. Historic, but truthfully kind of boring.
Also, the whole double champ thing is marred a bit when you realize that you can count the number of womens’ featherweights on one hand. Cyborg, the entire reason the UFC incepted the weight class, is gone. Felicia Spencer is just 2-1 in the division but she’s getting a title shot. The 29-year old isn’t a scrub by any means, but even if she moved down in weight we’re not sure how much of an impact she’d have.
As the main event of this Saturday’s UFC 250, Nunes vs. Spencer is pretty much a stay busy fight for the double champ. The scouting report on Spencer is still incomplete. Her fight against Cyborg skewed the Fightmetric numbers, as Spencer took a prolonged beating and absorbed tons of unanswered strikes. From what we’ve seen, Spencer is a strong, aggressive grappler but just an adequate striker. Unfortunately, she doesn’t have the skillset or physical ability to force opponents to grapple with her - which is going to be a huge problem here.
In contrast, Nunes is probably the best pure athlete in her division. That makes her faster and more explosive than everybody she faces - a massive advantage she puts to good use. It’s rare to find woman with KO power, but Nunes is the real deal with her striking. You can immediately see the snap to her kicks and punches, and no opponent can take too many of her shots flush - even ones with good chins like Holly Holm.
UFC Odds Pick: Parlay Nunes to win at -675
Let’s not get cute here. Nunes is easy money here, and a safe enough pick that you can use her to boost another bet. The problem with trying to make any other pick is that Nunes can be unpredictable. In her last five fights, two have ended in the first round and three have ended in the fifth. That makes betting the round total or decision prop too risky for our tastes.
