UFC Picks
Imavov has made a strong impression in the UFC and now he gets a big test against Cannonier. Imavov has very good striking abilities and he also has solid wrestling skills and decent cardiovascular fitness. He could be a leading middleweight contender for a long time, but keep in mind that he really hasn’t fought any great middleweight competition. And you can make a case that Cannonier isn’t a top contender either. Cannonier at least has fought a lot of good competition, including defeats of former UFC champions Sean Strickland and Anderson Silva. Cannonier is an excellent striker and he has good defense against takedowns and no one denies his cardio. This fight is basically a pick so you have to decide whether Cannonier still has enough left at the age of 40 to beat a fighter in Imavov who looks to be on the way up.
I don’t have a strong opinion either way on the side but I do like the rounds proposition. The rounds are listed at 4.5 with the over at -160. One thing we know about both of these fighters is that they have great cardio and going the distance is something each of them has done with regularity in the past. I know this is a five-round fight and that will be a bit different for them both, but I don’t see endurance being a problem for either of them. The only three losses other than the first fight in his career for Imavov were by decision and Cannonier is simply someone that is very difficult to finish. Of the six losses suffered by Cannonier, four of them were by decision. I don’t see either of these fighters doing enough to finish the other, so this should be an all-out war that goes the distance. I will go over the rounds total as my top play in this fight.
