Cynthia Calvillo was struggling to make 115 pounds, and wasn’t making much noise in the division to begin with. Perhaps jumping up to a much shallower division will give her the boost she needs. Coming off a draw against an unheralded Marina Rodriguez, Calvillo will make her flyweight debut this Saturday in a main event matchup against Jessica Eye. Eye is just two fights removed from a title match against Shevchenko - she was hopelessly outclassed and finished in just six minutes. The hope here is that Calvillo keeps developing, and perhaps turns into a legitimate threat to Shevchenko. Right now, Shevchenko is miles ahead of her division. A Calvillo victory would put her just one or two wins away from chance at Shevchenko - but that would be entirely too soon for her.

Eye is a strong wrestler who has benefited greatly from the inception of the 125-pound weight class. Her athleticism fares well against in her true weight class, although she has never seemed particularly dominant against even the mid-tier fighters of her division. She finds ways to win with her toughness and fight IQ, but Eye isn’t ever going to wow you in any area.
The question here is if Calvillo can impose her grappling. Though she’s no longer with Team Alpha Male, the influences of her former fight camp are still there: Calvillo is a fighter who wins through scrambles and top control. Now a member of Team Tiger Muay Thai, the jury is still out on if she can evolve as a striker with an excellent stable of kickboxers to train with. It has been a recurring theme that Alpha Male fighters tend to plateau sooner than later.
