Welterweight knockout artist Mike Perry (13-6, 11 KOs) will meet grappling specialist Mickey Gall (6-2, 5 SUBs) at UFC Fight Night: Poirier vs. Hooker on Saturday, June 27, 2020 at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada. The card airs live at 6pm ET on ESPN, with a lightweight scrap between lightweight contenders Dustin Poirier and Dan Hooker serving as the main event. The main card features four fights, with the prelims serving up six contests. Let’s take a closer look at Perry vs. Gall, which serves as a compelling clash of styles and personalities.
UFC Fight Night: Poirier vs. Hooker
Mike Perry (13-6, 11 KOs)
There was once a time where Perry was seen as a bright prospect and future contender - that was a long time ago. But we’ve got to say this for Perry: despite a mediocre record and some really bad losses, Platinum has managed to become a known commodity in a loaded weight class. The man has cemented himself as a guy that fans pay attention to. Part of it is because dudes drop when he touches them. A lot of it is because he’s a walking, talking MMA stereotype: he mean mugs the camera, attempts to talk like a tough guy loves to brawl.
Because people know who Perry is, the UFC has been willing to give him some pretty big names. Unfortunately, he hasn’t been able to do much with the opportunity, dropping scraps to Santiago Ponzinibbio, Cowboy Cerrone and Vicente Luque. Most recently Perry was knocked out by Geoff Neal last December. That was a tough loss to a relatively unknown opponent, and the UFC is giving Perry every opportunity to get back in the win column against Mickey Gall. The danger here is that a loss to Gall would pretty much be an argument that the UFC could cut ties with Perry.
Mickey Gall (6-2, 5 SUBs)
Gall showed plenty of marketing savvy when he called out CM Punk after a win on Dana White’s Lookin’ for a Fight YouTube series. Getting into the cage with a WWE superstar was a genius move to earn recognition as a fighter - even though Punk shouldn’t have been in the cage at all. Mickey one-upped himself by picking a fight with Sage Northcutt (who was still a super-hyped kid at the time) and collecting another submission win.
Since then, Gall has lost all his momentum. His 2-2 record has been unremarkable, with wins over unknowns in George Sullivan and Salim Touahri. One of his losses came against a solid Randy Brown, but the other was to an ancient Diego Sanchez. The fact that he got spanked by the weirdest, most vulnerable iteration of Sanchez speaks volumes to Gall’s prospects at 170. Before, he looked like an intriguing young grappling specialist. Now, the 28-year old looks roster filler that could be cut with another loss or two. Beating Perry would be a major upset and put some distance between him and a pink slip.

UFC Picks
The UFC odds at BookMaker.eu have Perry as a huge -313 favorite, with Gall at +238 on the comeback. This is indicative of the massive experience gap between the two: Gall is still barely a pro at this point, he has only fought sporadically and has never flashed much beyond decent grappling chops. While Perry’s fight IQ is seriously questionable, nobody ever questioned whether he belonged in the octagon. If Perry to win is too risky for you, take a look at his victory bets - there’s an excellent chance he knocks Gall out.
