UFC Fight Night: Namajunas vs. Cortez Betting
Rose Namajunas (12-6, 10-5 UFC)
Namajunas came into the UFC with a record of 2-1 and she has 10 wins and five losses in the UFC. In her last six fights, she has four wins and two losses. She defeated Jessica Andrade by split decision, Zhang Weili twice with once by KO and once by split decision, and Amanda Ribas by unanimous decision; while losing to Carla Esparza by split decision and Manon Fiorot by unanimous decision. Namajunas said this to mmajunkie.usatoday.com about her upcoming fight against Cortez, “It’s not like night and day difference. My approach is the same as far as what I’m going to do, and it pretty much is the same every time. As far as defense goes, I just have to watch out for a little bit of different things. I think that Tracy has better back control when she gets on the ground. She’s great on the top. … With Tracy, there are less dynamics and she’s kind of coming at you a little more. But she’s got great fundamentals, and I’m looking to make sure my fundamentals are better than hers and also have that extra flair, as well. I could beat her everywhere, so that’s my goal.”
Tracy Cortez (11-1, 5-0 UFC)
Cortez came into the UFC with a record of 6-1 and she has five wins and no losses in the UFC. She defeated Vanessa Melo by unanimous decision, Stephanie Egger by unanimous decision, Justine Kish by split decision, Melissa Gatto by unanimous decision, and Jasmine Jasudavicius by unanimous decision. Cortez’s only loss in her career was against Cheri Muraski by guillotine choke submission in August of 2017. Cortez has been a pro since 2017 and she has one win by TKO/KO and one by submission. UFC Picks
Cortez takes this fight on short notice, as she replaces Maycee Barber. Cortez has done nothing wrong in the UFC, winning all five of her fights, but now she takes a step up in competition to take on former strawweight champion Rose Namajunas. This is a huge fight for Namajunas as she looks to get into title contention again. The obvious question is whether or not Cortez is ready for the jump up in class. The UFC betting odds have Namajunas listed as about a 2-1 favorite and the rounds are listed at 4.5 with the over at a hefty price in UFC odds.
We really don’t know if Cortez is good enough to win this fight, so taking her at plus money is a risk. I am not laying more than 2-1 on Namajunas, as I think her best days are behind her. What we do know is that neither of these fighters has much finishing power. Namajunas has seven finishes among her 12 wins, but just one since 2019. Cortez has shown almost no power, with only two finishes in her 11 wins. I don’t lay big prices that often, but taking the rounds over the total is the way to go.
