An incredible regular season to this point leaves Los Angeles FC as a team with close to even odds to win the MLS Cup at the end of the year. LAFC have 13 more points than the next closest team in the MLS heading into their match with the Los Angeles Galaxy on Sunday night, and the road to the title will go through them. We’ve seen heavy favorites fall short due to the nature of the playoff in the past though, so if you are brave enough to against LAFC, there is a lot of value to be found elsewhere.

Odds Analysis
We’ve never seen a team like LAFC before in the MLS. Their overall numbers defy logic, and this squad is set to be the best in league history in a number of areas. LAFC are unbeaten at home with a sterling 11-0-1 record, they have scored a whopping 71 goals on the year (20 more than the next closest team), and they have only conceded 25 goals (five fewer than the next closest team). Their +46 goal differential is 30 more than the next best team.
Carlos Vela has been the star of the greatest team in MLS history, and he is set to break records too. Vela has 26 goals and 15 assists this season, putting him on pace to break Josef Martinez’s single season scoring record, and he should end the year with more combined goals and assists than anyone in the league by a wide margin. As long as he is healthy, he will make LAFC tough to beat.
It’s going to be hard to beat LAFC over the course of two games but beating them in a one-off even if the game is on the road is a more manageable task. That’s why there’s more value on teams in the East than the West.
Defending MLS Cup champions Atlanta United have the best chance of knocking off Los Angeles FC. The Five Stripes are atop the Eastern Conference, and their home field advantage is second to none. Josef Martinez has had another fantastic season, netting 22 goals, and Atlanta are finally getting solid play from Pity Martinez too. Ezequiel Barco has been excellent, giving this team a three-pronged attack.
New York City FC are the only other team with odds of 10-1 or less to win the MLS Cup. They are a defensively oriented team with a midfield maestro that should end the season with the second-most assists in a single season. Maxi Moralez has 18 assists on the season, and he has linked up with Heber often.
If you’re looking at the biggest bang for your buck, take a long gander at two of the Pacific Northwest clubs. The Seattle Sounders and Portland Timbers both have great odds for clubs of their quality, especially since I think they’ll be posting their first-round playoff games. Both teams have proven they can win in the postseason, so 25-1 and 30-1 are great odds.
Of the two, I like Portland the most. The Timbers host all but one of their remaining regular season matches, and they have a ton of scoring talent. Diego Valeri has long been one of the best playmakers in the league, and the addition of Brian Fernandez has made this team a real contender.
