Old School Meets New School
For the sixth time, the United States and Mexico will meet in the Gold Cup Final. The two heavyweights of the CONCACAF region were the two heavy favorites to win the tournament before the first game started, so it’s only fitting they meet in the final. Mexico have knocked off the US in four of their five previous meetings in the Gold Cup Final, but the USMNT are defending champions and have the advantage as hosts....
The final group winner of the Group Stage will be decided on Wednesday when the United States and Panama meet. Both sides are undefeated with wins over Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago to this point, but the US has the edge ahead of this match. Their +10 goal differential is far superior to that of Panama, so a draw for the Stars and Stripes will be enough to top the group. The Canal Men know they must win to finish first in Group D....
The United States will be looking for a bit of revenge when they face Trinidad and Tobago in their second game of the 2019 Gold Cup on Saturday. The USMNT failed to make it to the World Cup last year for the first time since 1990, and a loss to Trinidad and Tobago in their last qualifying match cost them. Try as they might, they could only knock in one goal against the Soca Warriors and the 2-1 defeat led to a major shake-up in American soccer....
It’s been a harrowing run-up to the Gold Cup for the United States. The USMNT moved on from Jurgen Klinsmann after missing out on the World Cup last year, and they are clearly entering a rebuilding phase under new manager Gregg Berhalter. The results haven’t been there just yet, but they are hoping to retain the Gold Cup despite their struggles. They are heavy favorites against Guyana, and anything less than a multiple goal victory would set off major alarm bells....
The Gold Cup kicks off this Saturday, and the favorite to win this year’s edition will be in action on the first day. Mexico have won the Gold Cup more times than any other country, and they are hefty favorites to win Group A. Accordingly, the oddsmakers have Mexico installed as massive favorites over Cuba in Los Angeles. They will certainly have the crowd with them as there will be hundreds of El Tri flags among the tens of thousands of supporters at the Rose Bowl....
Since the Gold Cup replaced the CONCACAF Championship as the region’s top soccer tournament in 1991, it has been dominated by the United States and Mexico. The United States won both the first and most recent Gold Cup and has won the event six times, while Mexico has won it seven times. The only other country to win the Gold Cup was Canada back in 2000, and the Canadians haven’t been back to the final since that point. ...
