MLS 2020 Season Preview and Betting Odds

In less than two weeks, the 2020 MLS season will get underway. Los Angeles FC and Atlanta United are the favorites to hoist the MLS Cup according to the soccer futures odds, but six clubs have a decent chance of winning it all according to the oddsmakers. The other teams are 20-1 or higher to win it all, providing a clear separation between the contenders and everyone else in this league. Since 14 teams make the playoffs, over half the clubs in the postseason will be 20-1 longshots or more, and there is sure to be value in one of those longshots.

The 2020 MLS season will start on February 29, and it will end during the first week of October. Get in on the action and bet on MLS live at BookMaker.

Odds Analysis

Los Angeles FC posted the best record in the history of the MLS last season. LAFC was the most dominant team we’ve ever seen in this league, but the Supporters’ Shield winners couldn’t overcome Seattle in the Western Conference Finals. They are back with a vengeance as Carlos Vela, Diego Rossi, and Adama Diomande are all back to make this attack the most intimidating in the league, and this team could be even more explosive with Walter Zimmerman, Steve Beitashour, and Tyler Miller all leaving LAFC over the winter.

Josef Martinez, Ezequiel Barco, and Pity Martinez should make Atlanta United the team to beat in the Eastern Conference. The former Martinez has been the best forward in the league since 2018, and Barco has been one of the top playmakers despite being just 20 years old. If Pity Martinez lives up to his potential, Atlanta United could break records on offense, but the back line is somewhat suspect with the loss of so many key contributors.

The Seattle Sounders have been to the MLS Cup three times in the last four seasons, and they have made it to the playoffs in all 11 seasons they have played in the league. This club is a perennial contender that has never finished worse than fourth in the regular season, and Seattle is poised to be one of the top clubs in the MLS once more. The Sounders still boast stars like Nicolas Lodeiro, Raul Ruidiaz, and Jordan Morris, so the loss of Roman Torres and others won’t hurt too much.

New York City FC has been one of the most star-crossed franchises in the MLS since entering the league. They have continually been one of the top teams in the league during the regular season, but they have failed to put it together in the playoffs. NYCFC have yet to even make the conference finals, so it’s hard to have much faith in them given their track record. This should be one of the top teams in the regular season once more though.

The best longshot on the board is probably Sporting Kansas City. Sporting KC had a dismal 2019 campaign, but this club was the best in the West in 2018, and they made eight straight trips to the postseason from 2011 to 2018. They shouldn’t be plagued by injuries like they were in 2019, making them a formidable foe in 2020.
