The 2020 French Open will be without top-ranked and defending champion Ashleigh Barty, as World No. 2 Simona Halep is the current French Open betting favorite at odds of +300. The only other player listed at single-digit odds is Kiki Bertens at odds of +900. If you get past Halep, there are a lot of contenders to win the French Open on the women’s side, as 10 other players are listed at odds of 20-1 or less. That should give us some darkhorse contenders to consider as we look at the French Open, set to begin on Monday in Paris. Let’s look at French Open odds and picks.

Favorite
It is hard to argue with Halep as the favorite. She won this event two years ago and she is ranked No. 2 in the world. She gets the benefit of not having to deal with Barty who is not playing and there is a good chance that she won’t have to deal with Osaka or Williams. as they may not play. I don’t know that Halep can be trusted as a favorite and there is not a ton of value in taking her at +300, so I am going to pass on betting her at these odds.
Darkhorses
If you look at the seeds, you’ll notice that Karolina Pliskova is the second seed, but you take her at your own risk. She lost in the first round at the Western and Southern Open and in the second round at the US Open. I think Bertens is overvalued at odds of 9-1, as she has never shown anything at Roland Garros. Andreescu has made the quarterfinals a couple of times, but I want more than 10-1 on her winning the title. Muguruza at 12-1 is worth considering, as she has won this title in the past and has an overall record at Roland Garros of 27-6. Brady might eventually be someone to watch, but it is too early for her to win the French Open in her career. Svitolina could be someone to watch, as she has played well in Paris in the past. Kvitova and Azarenka look to be overvalued, while Mertens at least provides some value.
2020 French Open Picks
I really don’t like taking favorites, so I am not backing Halep. She may end up winning, but I just can’t take her at these low odds. The darkhorse category is where I will focus with my picks. I think you have to take a flyer on Muguruza at odds of 12-1. She has won this event in the past and there is no reason to expect that she won’t have a chance at the title this time around. We do get some value on her at double-digit odds and a deep run at the French is expected. Another player to look at is Svitolina who has a solid overall record in Paris. She is 23-10 in her career at Roland Garros. I am also looking at Mertens who has a career mark of 7-3 in the French Open. She has some value at her current odds of 16-1.
