As with the men, the women’s U.S. Open won’t have a lot of its stars present in New York. Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka will be there to give the tournament a chance to see a rematch of their famous 2018 final, but other heavy hitters will be absent. Bianca Andreescu, Ashleigh Barty, Kiki Bertens, Simona Halep, Jelena Ostapenko, Samantha Stosur, and Elina Svitolina have all decided to not take part in this year’s tournament. Andreescu won’t be there to defend her title after beating Williams in the final last year, but other former champions like Angelique Kerber and Sloane Stephens will be in Flushing Meadows.
The 2020 U.S. Open will be broadcast in the United States on the ESPN family of networks and the Tennis Channel. This year’s event will start on Monday, August 31, and conclude on Sunday, September 13.

The greatest player in the history of women’s tennis will turn 39 two weeks after this tournament concludes, but she is still the favorite to win the U.S. Open. Serena Williams has won the U.S. Open six times in the Open Era, tying Chris Evert as the most successful champion here. She has finished runner-up here four times, and she was one of the finalists here in each of the last two years. Williams was stunned by Wang Qiang in the third round of the 2020 Australian Open, and she was bounced early from the Cincinnati Masters though, so it’s hard to bet on her at this price given the grind of a two-week tournament on hard court.
Naomi Osaka is the better bet. Osaka beat Williams in straight sets for the 2018 U.S. Open title. She won the 2019 Australian Open title over Petra Kvitova too, so she knows what it takes to win a Grand Slam. We have seen some very disappointing performances from Osaka over her last four majors as she has failed to get out of the fourth round in all four events, but she excels on hard court and has looked strong at the Cincinnati Masters. As the No. 4 seed in a weaker field, she should put those failures behind her here.
The No. 1 overall seed for the 2020 U.S. Open is Karolina Pliskova. Pliskova has yet to win a major though, and she has failed to get out of the fourth round in each of her last four Grand Slam events. To make matters worse, she has not been too impressive over her last three tournaments, getting bounced in the quarterfinals in Dubai and the Round of 16 in Qatar. She was stunned in the first round of the Cincinnati Masters last Sunday, so there is a good chance she is knocked out early.
Sofia Kenin is another player to like given the tennis betting odds on her to win the U.S. Open. Kenin won the Australian Open over Garbine Muguruza earlier this year, and she is still young, so you don’t have to worry about the wear and tear on Kenin like you do with other players. She has never made it out of the third round of the U.S. Open, but she won the Lyon Open earlier this year and has been very boom or bust in singles events. That makes Kenin a nice play at 12-1.
Given the weakened field, will this be the time that 16-year-old Coco Gauff breaks through and announces she is one of the best in the game? Gauff is a phenom and a future star of women’s tennis. She made her WTA debut just after turning 15 years old last year, and she became the youngest player ever to qualify for Wimbledon last year. Gauff won the Linz Open last year, and this could be her time to shine.
