The Australian Open is the first Grand Slam tennis event of the year, and this year’s competition is sure to be a doozy. On the men’s side of the bracket, the greatest trio of players to ever contemporaneously play at the same time are back in Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic, but the women’s bracket is bound to be far more entertaining. Since Serena Williams won the Serena Slam in the summer of 2015, we have seen 11 different women win the last 17 Grand Slam tennis titles. The oddsmakers have acknowledged how open the field is with five players listed with odds of 10-1 or lower, so we will be in for a treat Down Under.
The 2020 Australian Open will run for two weeks from January 20 to February 2, 2020 at Melbourne Park in Melbourne, Australia. ESPN, ESPN2, and The Tennis Channel will broadcast all the action in the United States, and the bulk of the coverage will be on ESPN2.

Odds Analysis
There’s no surprise to see Williams listed as the favorite. She is the most decorated player in the history of women’s tennis with 23 Grand Slam titles in the Open Era, and Williams is still going strong at the age of 38. Williams is always the favorite per the tennis betting odds provided she is healthy due to her incredible power and pedigree, but she no longer has the endurance to play at a high level for a full two weeks.
Her draw is much tougher than it should be as well. Serena Williams is in the same quarter of the bracket as five other Grand Slam champions, and only one player can make it to the semifinals. Naomi Osaka, Sloane Stephens, Samantha Stosur, Caroline Wozniacki, and Venus Williams are all on this quarter, making it tough to back Williams or any of the other five competitors.
Defending French Open champion Ashleigh Barty has the third lowest odds on the board. Barty has yet to advance past the Quarterfinals of any other Grand Slam event, but she did end up losing to eventual runner-up Petra Kvitova in Melbourne last year. She will be the home crowd favorite as she hails from Queensland, and that should give her a boost while potentially rattling her opponents.
Simona Halep is a tempting pick at 10-1 since she is largely boom or bust. Halep has been eliminated in the first round of Grand Slam events as a No. 1 seed, but if she survives early mistakes, she is a world beater. Halep has won two of the last seven Grand Slam titles, but she has yet to win a major on hard court.
The most intriguing pick of the bunch is Karolina Pliskova. Pliskova has never won a Grand Slam, but she has odds to win the Australian Open of 10-1 after winning the Brisbane International last week. The Czech national made it to the semifinals of this eent last year, but she lost to eventual champion Naomi Osaka.
