The 2021 Australian Open is expected to begin on Monday, February 8, COVID-19 allowing, and on the women’s side it is Naomi Osaka listed as the 5-1 favorite. Osaka won the Australian Open two years ago, but she struggled last year, losing in the third round. Osaka has been on a major roll since last summer, winning all of her matches, including a second U.S. Open title. World No. 1 Ashleigh Barty is the second choice in the betting, while Serena Williams and Aryna Sabalenka are co-third choices at odds of 9-1. Let’s look at 2021 Australian Open odds and Australian Open picks.

Favorite
Naomi Osaka 5-1
Osaka is the favorite to win the Australian Open, but at odds of 5-1 she is definitely not a sure thing. She won this event two years ago and then didn’t play that well a year ago. She is on a major roll heading into this event and you can make a case she is the best hard court women’s player in the world.
Contenders
Ashleigh Barty 8-1
Barty made the semifinals of this event a year ago, but it is hard to know what to expect from her, as she just recently returned to action. She has looked good in Melbourne and there is no question she has the talent to win and getting odds of 8-1 makes her an interesting choice.
Serena Williams 9-1
It was not a good 2020 for Serena, as she didn’t even make a single Grand Slam final. The major issue was injury and it appears that she enters 2021 fully healthy. Serena has won this title seven times and she has said that winning Grand Slam events is her only goal. She is looking for her 24th Grand Slam title to tie the record set by Margaret Court. I think there is some definite value on Serena at odds of 9-1.
Aryna Sabalenka 9-1
One of the players who is getting attention leading up to this year’s Australian Open is Sabalenka. She has moved up to No. 7 in the world and at 22-years old looks to be one of the future stars of the sport.
Simona Halep 10-1
I think Halep is overvalued even at odds of 10-1. She has never won this event, with her best showing a runner-up finish in 2018. She lost in the semifinals a year ago and I don’t know that she has improved enough to make her a good choice to win this year.
Longshots
I have to mention the defending champion Sofia Kenin at odds of 14-1. She surprised a year ago and it is not out of the realm of possibility for her to make a deep run again this year. If you really want to take a flyer then you might consider Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova who is listed at odds of more than 100-1. She has reached the quarterfinals in Melbourne in three of the last four years. She definitely gives bettors a lot of value and if she makes a deep run you could hedge your bet because of her long odds.
Australian Open Picks
I think Osaka is on a mission to win this tournament and I think she has value at odds of 5-1. I also can’t ignore Serena at odds of 9-1. The only time to look at Serena is in Grand Slam events and she appears to be healthy. I will also take her at odds of 9-1.
