The French Open begins on Sunday, May 30 and on the women’s side, the past two champions, Iga Swiatek and Ashleigh Barty are the top two betting choices, at odds of +240 and +500 respectively. Unlike the men’s side, where there are only a few top contenders, the women’s side has 10 players listed with odds of +2500 or less. There is no question that Swiatek has the game for clay, but history is against her, as it has been 14 years since a woman defended her French Open title.
Let’s look at the 2021 French Open, odds and picks.

Favorite
There is a lot to like about Swiatek on clay and there is no denying she looked great a year ago when she dominated Sofia Kenin in the final. The only concern if you bet on Swiatek is the pressure, as Swiatek is just 19 years old and she has the pressure of being the defending champ. It could be that the only player who can stop her is Barty.
Top Contenders
Two years ago it was Ashleigh Barty winning the French Open title and she is listed at odds of 5-1. She is the No. 1 ranked player in the world and she comes in playing well having won in Madrid. There is some slight concern, as she has an arm injury that caused her to retire in Rome, but Barty said she will be “good to go” at the French Open. If she is at full strength then she could have some value at odds of 5-1.
The other player listed at single-digit odds is Aryna Sabalenka at 9-1. She has yet to win a Grand Slam, but she has played well on clay this season. Other than a loss to Gauff in Rome, her form has been excellent. She definitely has the most value of the top contenders.
Live Longshots
There is a laundry list of longshots at this year’s French Open on the women’s side. I will mention two longshots I think are worth taking. The first is Coco Gauff. She had a really good win against Sabalenka in Rome and she had made great progress with her clay court game. She is 9-3 on clay this season and he record since February is 20-6. I’ll take a shot on her at odds of 18-1.
The other longshot I think worth considering is Petra Kvitova at odds of 25-1. She made the semifinals in the French Open last year and easily could have been matched up against Swiatek in the final. I think she has some value at these odds.
French Open Picks
It is easy to make a case for Swiatek but I have a hard time backing her at odds of just over 2-1. I think there is more value on Barty at odds of 5-1. She won this event two years ago and she is currently the top ranked player in the world. If you are looking for a longshot there are plenty of players to consider, but I think the odds on Kvitova are appealing at 25-1. She is definitely capable of making a deep run and that is really all you are hoping for with a longshot because once they get into the semifinals or final you can then hedge your bet.
