Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint
We don't often get the chance to talk about sprinters in the world of horse racing, but at the Breeders’ Cup we have several races which are run at incredibly short distances. The first of these sprints and the first race of the second day of competition at the Breeders' Cup is the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint.
The 2019 Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint will take place on Saturday, November 2. Catch this $1,000,000 purse get awarded on NBC Sports Network. Post-time is set for 2:55 p.m. ET.

2019 Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint Field and Notes
This race is likely to have two horses that should get the bulk of the betting action in Come Dancing for trainer Carlos Martin and Covfefe for trainer Brad Cox. Also in the mix as a top contender could be Guarana for trainer Chad Brown.
Come Dancing is a 5-year old mare who has looked really good this year. The horse has won four of her five starts this year. Covfefe has also lost just once this season and that loss came against older horses.
Guarana was beaten for the first time by Street Band in the Cotillion, but she should relish going back to one turn.
Darkhorse contenders include Bellafina for trainer Simon Callaghan, Dawn the Destroyer for trainer Kiaran McLaughlin, Serengeti Empress for trainer Tom Amoss and Spiced Perfection for trainer Peter Miller.
Longshots are Danuska’s My Girl, Heavenhasmynikki, Lady Ninja, Selcourt.
Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint Qualifying
There are a total of 14 fillies and/or mares who will ultimately head to the track for the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint in November, but only three of those spots are filled automatically with "Win and You're In Races." All three are held on American soil, and as a result, the mass majority of the fillies and mares in this field are going to be bred and raced in the United States.

Thanks to the fact that these three races are all run separately, it's entirely possible that one filly or mare could win all three races, something which would open up the rest of the field to essentially anyone who wants to join. It wouldn't be surprising if the field at the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint didn't end up reaching the full 14 horses this year simply due to the fact that there just isn't all that much of a market for female sprinters in this day and age.

You'd think that three-year old fillies would end up having a shot in the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint over the older girls, but only once has that happened, as in 2018 it was Shamrock Rose getting the victory.
Groupie Doll went back-to-back in the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint in 2012 and 2013, making her the first and only repeat winner of the race. It was also one of three times that the same jockey (Rajiv Maragh) and the only time the same trainer (William Bradley) won the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint on two occasions as well. Irad Ortiz Jr. added his name to the two-time jockey winners of this race when he rode Shamrock Rose to the winner’s circle in 2018.
