Royal Ascot Gold Cup
The Gold Cup is a Group 1 race that is normally held on the third day of the Royal Ascot meeting, unofficially known as Ladies’ Day. It is for horses that specialize in running long distances, which makes sense considering the race is 2 miles, 3 furlongs and 210 yards long. The race is the first leg of the Stayer’s Triple Crown and is followed by the Goodwood Cup and the Doncaster Cup. The last Triple Crown winner was Double Trigger in 1995.
The most successful horse in the Gold Cup was Yeats who won the race in 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009. The leading jockey was Lester Piggott who won the race 11 times. The leading trainer is Aidan O’Brien who has won the race seven times. The leading owner is Sue Magnier who has won the race seven times.
Ridden by jockey Frankie Dettori and trained by John Gosden, Stradivarius won the Gold Cup for a second straight year by toppling the field in 2019. He’s the first repeat winner since Yeats won the last of his four in a row in 2009.
