The 2020 SEC football schedule was released on Monday with teams beginning play on September 26. The hope for each of the SEC schools is that they can manage the coronavirus and keep their players relatively healthy. Whether that is possible or not is still a huge question mark. If things go as planned the 2020 SEC football schedule will be very exciting, as Alabama will host Georgia on October 17th in the first regular season meeting between the teams in Tuscaloosa since 2007. New Mississippi head coach Lane Kiffin will face his former boss Nick Saban and Alabama on October 10th. The biggest game of the season has defending national champion LSU hosting Alabama on November 14th.
Schedule Flexibility
Because of the potential for COVID-19 outbreaks among teams, the SEC put in some flexibility to the schedule. Every team will have a bye week and there will also be another break, as no teams will play on December 12th. That gives the conference two weeks to reschedule any games that were postponed. Each team will play 10 conference games and unlike the ACC and Big 12, there will be no non-conference games for SEC teams this season. The season begins on September 26th with all 14 teams in action. While the schedule was changed a lot, there will still be the annual Alabama-Auburn and Mississippi-Mississippi State games on Thanksgiving weekend. The SEC Championship game is scheduled for December 19th in Atlanta.
Tough Sledding
New Mississippi State head coach Mike Leach may wish he stayed with Washington State. His Bulldogs face a brutal schedule including a four-week stretch that has them playing at Alabama, home against Auburn and at Georgia. Kentucky will also face a difficult schedule, as they have a brutal road trip in late November that has them going to Alabama and Florida. The early season schedule for South Carolina is tough as they have to play Florida, LSU and Auburn. And don’t forget about Arkansas, as the Razorbacks have lost 19 straight SEC games. They better get that first win quickly under new head coach Sam Pittman because they close out the season with six games in six weeks including matchups against Texas A&M, Florida, LSU and Alabama.
