The Fourth of July Weekend sent shockwaves throughout the Pac 12. USC and UCLA are reportedly set to join the Big Ten in two years, and that has other schools looking for an exit. As many as four schools may join the Big 12 as a result of the two Los Angeles schools moving on to greener pastures, and the Big Ten could add two more Pac 12 schools too. If all that were to come to fruition it would likely mean the death of the conference as the remaining schools would probably be forced to seek refuge in the Mountain West Conference.

USC has only won the Pac 12 once in the past decade, but there is a lot of excitement at Heritage Hall after the Trojans orchestrated a coup by bringing Lincoln Riley to Los Angeles. Riley will immediately modernize this offense, and he was able to give the talent level a jolt with his bevy of transfers and freshmen.
Caleb Williams will immediately be one of the best quarterbacks in the conference, and the Trojans are happy to welcome Travis Dye in from Oregon. The loss of Drake London to the NFL will hurt, but Fred Biletnikoff Award winner Jordan Addison transferred to USC from Pittsburgh along with former OU receiver Mario Williams and former Colorado receiver Brenden Rice. USC ranked 82nd in SP+ last year, but the Trojans are a fringe national title contender in 2022 with so much new talent.
Defending conference champions Utah are the next favorites on the board. There were a lot of rumors swirling around Kyle Whittingham and his potential retirement after the Rose Bowl, but Whittingham is back for at least one more season in Salt Lake City.
The defense probably won’t be as good as it was last year without Devin Lloyd, yet the offense is going to be tough for opponents to stop. Utah has a power run game that wears down most front sevens in the Pac 12, and the Utes have two elite tight ends in Brant Kuithe and Dalton Kincaid.
Oregon is the other team to watch in the Pac 12 according to the oddsmakers even though Mario Cristobal left for Miami in the offseason. The Ducks brought in young Georgia defensive coordinator Dan Lanning to improve this side of the ball, but this team may take a step back in 2022. The defense no longer has an elite pass rusher in Kayvon Thibodeaux, and it’s hard to be too excited about Bo Nix given what we saw from him at Auburn. This entire offensive line returns though, so the ground game should be solid.
Kalen DeBoer was hired by Washington to jumpstart an offense that completely collapsed in 2021. The Huskies finished 101st in Offensive SP+ last season, but they have the potential for a quick turnaround given they have two potential stars at quarterback. Freshman Sam Huard was a five-star recruit and is royalty as the son of Damon Huard and the nephew of Brock Huard, and Michael Penix Jr. was superb when healthy during his time at Indiana.
This defense is going to take a big step back though with only three returning starters. Washington is going to be reinventing itself in 2022, but the Huskies could win the Pac 12 North if Oregon stumbles.
UCLA finally started to turn things around in Chip Kelly’s fourth season at the helm. Kelly won just 10 games in his first three seasons with the Bruins, but the program went 8-4 in 2021. This offense is in good hands with Dorian Thompson-Robinson under center, yet the Bruins could take a major step back with just two returning starters on defense.
Every other team is at least 25-1 to win the conference. Washington State has the next shortest odds to win the Pac 12, but Stanford is a team that must be shown respect with 10 returning starters on offense. It’s been a rough last three seasons for David Shaw and the Cardinal, but Stanford won nine games or more for nine seasons from 2010 to 2018, and we could see this program roar back to life.
