A model of consistency under Dabo Swinney, the Clemson Tigers have won at least 10 games in each of the past 12 seasons with seven ACC titles in the last eight years. Clemson isn’t going anywhere and once again is poised to win a championship as the favorite on the odds board. However, the gap is closing with Florida State a close second. Clemson and FSU were the only ACC programs in 2022 with double-figure wins. The league eliminated its division format with the top two teams in the conference standings playing for the ACC championship. The middle of the conference is strong with North Carolina, Louisville, NC State and Miami all boasting 18/1 or better odds while possessing the talent and ability to upset the favorites at any time.

The ACC has been Clemson’s playground for so long that it’s expected the Tigers would be the main contender. The price for success has been steep with changes to the coaching staff and personnel over the last several years, but the Tigers continue to win at a high rate. After sputtering to a 3-3 record over their last six games of 2022, the Tigers might appear vulnerable. They also have a change at quarterback with Cade Klubnik taking over late last season prompting the transfer of DJ Uiagalelei.
After seeing limited duty most of the season, Klubnik started the final two games throwing for nearly 600 yards in those outings. He had an up and down Orange Bowl throwing for 320 yards with an additional 51 yards and a touchdown on the ground. However, he completed just 55.6 percent of his passes with two picks. There might be some growing pains on offense, but the return of Will Shipley, who rushed for 1,182 yards and 15 TDs should help stabilize the group.
After enduring four straight losing seasons the Seminoles broke through winning 10 games last year. The upward trajectory of the program under Mike Norvell should continue sparking hope that FSU can unseat Clemson at the top of the conference. The Noles have the edge on offense with Jordan Travis back behind center. Travis threw for 3,214 yards with 24 TDs and Troy Benson rushed for nearly 1,000 yards as the Noles ranked among the top 20 nationally in scoring. There are few weaknesses on this club making them a threat to Clemson’s dominance.
Clemson and FSU are clearly the top teams in the ACC though the second tier has some intriguing options. Winning nine of their first 10 games last season put UNC in a good spot, however four straight setbacks to close the campaign dampened what otherwise was a solid year. The skid started with a loss to Georgia Tech as a 22-point favorite. After throwing for an ACC best 4,321 yards, Drake Maye is back to ensure there are no lingering effects.
Another program with plenty of upside and the same amount of questions is Miami. Mario Cristobal has upgraded the talent in his short tenure and the club looks for Tyler Van Dyke to rebound after struggling last year. in 2021 Van Dyke tossed 25 TD passes and only six picks. Dealing with injuries last year he had only 10 scoring passes and was intercepted five times. Implementing new coordinators on each side of the football will also be an adjustment.
Louisville has favorable odds following an 8-5 record in 2022. They also have a new coach with Jeff Brohm returning to his alma mater. Brohm led Purdue to back-to-back winning seasons claiming the Big Ten West title in 2022 to earn the programs first trip to the Big Ten Championship. Wherever he’s gone explosive offenses have followed.
The Cardinals will turn to transfer Jake Plummer at QB with Malik Cunningham gone and the portal helped fill voids on the line and at receiver. The biggest thing going for Louisville in its quest to reach the ACC Championship is the schedule. The top three teams – Clemson, FSU and UNC – are off the docket giving Louisville a path to at least reach the title contest.
