The top of the odds board for the 2023 Pac-12 football champion shows how tight the conference is with five teams opening with odds of +750 or shorter. The return of Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams has the USC Trojans positioned at the top of the heap eyeing their first College Football Playoff appearance and even more. The Trojans boasted the best offense in the conference and one of the top units in the country last season, however a Pac-12 title and anything more depends on how much the defense improves. Should USC fail again to stop opponents quality programs are waiting to take the flag. Washington is the second favorite followed Oregon, defending champ Utah and UCLA.

The Pac-12 wasn’t immune to realignment and will lose two of its flagship programs when USC and UCLA bolt for the Big Ten in 2024. If the men of Troy thought winning the Pac was tough wait till they get a taste of a different brand of football. As one of the most storied programs in college football, USC struggled to find consistency with a revolving door of coaches since back to back national championships in the early 2000s. That issue is apparently resolved with the hiring of Lincoln Riley last year. SC matched the most wins in a season since 2008 by going 11-3.
However, the year closed on a sour note with a loss to Utah in the Pac-12 title game and a crushing 46-45 loss to Tulane in the Cotton Bowl blowing a 15-point lead with less than five minutes to play in the fourth quarter. That was kind of theme that prevented the Trojans from better things. And if USC is going to win the conference title they have to be better stopping opponents.
Williams is a major reason if not THE reason why the Trojans are favored to win the conference. Throwing for over 4,500 yards with 42 TD passes and only five picks, Williams helped the offense average over 506 yards and 41.4 points. The playmakers are in place for another explosive season offensively and SC used the portal to help bolster its defense.
It’s hard to imagine a 1-win team from a season ago getting as much attention as the Colorado Buffaloes. But no other program hired Deion Sanders. Sanders went to work immediately transforming the roster, and while the Buffs aren’t a threat they should at least be fun to watch with Coach Prime.
Back to the contenders, and there are plenty should USC stumble. Two-time reigning champ Utah is fourth on the odds list devalued since the health of Cameron Rising is a concern. A knee injury in the Rose Bowl loss to Penn State leaves his status for the start of the season in doubt. The Utes beat USC twice last year winning games in the trenches, where they’re always tough.
Sandwiched in between USC and Utah on the odds board is Washington and Oregon. Both clubs return a veteran QB to lead what should be impressive offenses. Michael Penix Jr. is back to run the Huskies offense after averaging nearly 40 points last season. And Bo Nix, who topped the league in completion percentage with 29 TD passes, leads the Ducks. Like USC, though, both teams have holes on defense while also needing reconstruct their offensive lines.
For the first time in what seems like ages Dorion Thompson-Robinson won’t be quarterbacking UCLA, and as a result the Bruins are further down the odds board. DTR left the program in a much better place leading the club to its highest victory total in nearly a decade. For the Bruins to take the next step and win double figures, a quick transition is needed from new starter Dante Moore.
Closing out 2022 with wins over rival Oregon and Florida in the Las Vegas Bowl has the Oregon State Beavers positioned as a sleeper. OSU didn’t match the offensive exploits of other teams in the conference but they are looking for DJ Uiagalelei to change that. One of the top QBs in the portal looks for a new start behind an experienced front. Before you go throwing down on the Beavs to win the title keep in mind they did lose standout defenders that will be tough to replace.
