Since Kirby Smart took over the reins in Athens, the Georgia Bulldogs have been a force within the College Football betting landscape. That likely has much to do with QB Carson Beck, as well as 14 other starters from last year’s 13-1 team, returning to run it back in 2024-25. While the win total leaves very little wiggle room for hiccups along the way, Georgia is currently the favorite not only to reclaim the SEC title but also to win the whole darn thing in the now expanded College Football Playoff. Winning two titles and 95.2 percent of their games over the last three years has undeniably earned the respect of the oddsmakers!

A Case for the Over: From the quarterback to the offensive line to the backfield and the pass-catching corps, the Bulldogs are nothing short of rock solid from top to bottom. Beck completed 72.4 percent of his passes for nearly 4,000 yards with a 24:6 TD/INT ratio. He enters the year as the +650 favorite to win the Heisman Trophy at the online sportsbook. Although the ground game loses a pair of rushers that combined for over 1,800 yards and 30+ touchdowns, the backfield will be just fine with Trevor Etienne coming in from Florida after a standout season with the Gators. This confidence largely stems from Georgia’s offensive line, which is one of the best in the country. Four starters return from a unit that ranked seventh in sacks allowed and surrendered just 14 tackles for loss, all while paving the way and holding the line for the nation’s No. 21 rushing and No. 10 passing attacks. Rounding it all out are the wide receiver and tight end rooms, bursting with talent and ready to step up now that Brock Bowers and Ladd McConkey have moved on to the NFL. Last season, this unit ranked No. 6 overall and No. 5 in scoring. It’s scary to think, but it might be even more lethal throughout 2024-25!
A Case for the Under: Truthfully, I don’t have many solid reasons to suggest CFB bettors fade Georgia’s win total. There are some questions in the secondary and the pass rush wasn’t great last season, but the defense as a whole is set to be formidable with the mix of returning talent and new additions. My main concern is the team’s motivation to push for an undefeated season, knowing they could afford to lose a game or two and still secure a spot in the expanded 12-team College Football Playoff. While last season ended on a strong note, the expanded playoff format provides a wider margin for error during the regular season. The coaching staff might choose to take advantage of this, keeping the roster fresh for the more critical games later in the year. Could the Dawgs be upset in Tuscaloosa in their grudge match with the Crimson Tide? Could they fall in their first-ever SEC game against the Texas Longhorns in Austin? Then there’s the tough back-to-back gauntlet at Ole Miss followed by a home clash against Tennessee. Land mines are aplenty, making it possible that Kirby Smart and his staff might ease up to avoid peaking too early. Just something to consider...

I'm not sure if the betting action is coming from sharp or square bettors, but I'm baffled by the market steaming the over on the Bulldogs’ college football season win total to the point where the over is now carrying -140 juice. Have you seen the schedule the favorite on the CFB national title odds has to navigate? Beyond what I mentioned earlier, there’s also the neutral site matchup against the Clemson Tigers, a home game against what I believe will be an improved Auburn team, and the "World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party" grudge match with Florida. Though Georgia is likely to be favored in all 12 regular-season games, the schedule is brutal. They face five teams currently ranked in the preseason top-25, with three in the top-6! Given that they don’t need a perfect season to make the playoff, I'm inclined to bet against them exceeding their win total and hit the under at a more attractive plus-money return on investment.
