The Memphis Tigers haven’t skipped much of a beat since Mike Norvell took his whistle to Tallahassee to call the shots for the Florida State program. Ryan Silverfield stepped in and has led the team to three winning campaigns through four tries. The other saw the team finish 6-6 and miss out on the bowl season. Despite this, the Tigers have yet to compete in the American Athletic Conference title game with him at the helm. Regardless, Memphis enters the College Football betting season off a rock-solid 10-3 campaign, capped off by a 10-point win over Iowa State in the Liberty Bowl. Linemakers at the online sportsbook expect another strong showing from this year’s squad, evidenced by their season win total odds set at 9—the highest of all AAC teams! As watered down as the conference has become with the departures of UCF, Cincinnati, Houston, and SMU in recent years, the Tigers are the odds-on favorite to take home the conference title. Should that come to pass, Memphis will find itself in a position to qualify for the expanded College Football Playoff. Can the Tigers live up to expectations? Let’s dig into the offseason and make an informed decision on how to bet their win total.

A Case for the Over: Though Blake Watson and his 1,150+ rushing yards and team-high 14 touchdowns are no longer on the roster, Memphis made a strong move in the transfer portal by acquiring former South Carolina RB Mario Anderson. While he only managed 707 yards on 143 carries with the Gamecocks last season, he still averaged 4.9 yards per carry for one of the nation’s worst rushing attacks (No. 130). Memphis needs to replace four starters along its offensive line, but capable bodies are available, with expected contributors also brought in via the portal. If the running game can improve upon last year’s No. 76 ranking, which saw the unit rush for 152.0 yards per game, the sky will be the limit for an offense that is loaded everywhere else. QB Seth Henigan is back under center for his senior campaign, fresh off throwing for over 3,800 yards and 32 touchdowns. He also has the benefit of having his top two receiving options back in Roc Taylor and Demeer Blankumsee with the duo combining for just short of 2,000 receiving yards and 11 TD before going off in the bowl game. This unit scored just under 40 points per game last season and could be even better in 2024-25.
A Case for the Under: As lethal the offense proved to be a season ago, the defense left much to be desired. Though reinforcements were brought in via the portal and recruiting, significant improvement will be needed on this side of the ball for Memphis to exceed the highest win total odds in the conference. This shouldn’t be too difficult considering the defense allowed 423.2 yards per game (No. 113), with most of the damage coming through the air, where opponents shredded the secondary for 268.0 yards per game (No. 124). Although the run defense was better (No. 79), this was primarily because opponents found it easy to pass. An extreme lack of pass rush also contributed to Memphis allowing 28.8 points per game (No. 95). This side of the ball will heavily rely on numerous newcomers to rectify these problem areas. While Memphis did a good job in the portal by acquiring players to help address deficiencies, the rebuild still needs to be seen through on the field of play. On paper, the defense looks better, but it remains to be seen if it will all come to fruition.

Linemakers predict the UTSA Roadrunners to be the primary threat to the Tigers' bid for AAC bragging rights. Unfortunately, Silverfield’s troops will have to travel to the Alamodome to face them. Other road trips include games against South Florida and Tulane. Thankfully, the Bulls and Green Wave aren’t as strong as in previous years. Aside from the road trip to Doak Campbell Stadium where they’ll crack skulls with the Seminoles, there aren’t many spots on this schedule where the Tigers won’t be favored to win, according to the closing CFB betting odds. In my mind, Memphis is far and away the cream of the watered-down conference crop. There’s no excuse for not achieving 10 regular season wins in the fifth season of the current regime. If that happens, they will smash this impost and snag the lone Group of Five bid into the CFP.
