Never in the 119-year history of the Ole Miss football program had the Rebels achieved an 11-win season. That milestone was reached last season when Lane Kiffin led the team to an 11-2 record, culminating in a 38-25 outright Peach Bowl victory over the Penn State Nittany Lions as near touchdown underdogs. This marked the second double-digit win tally in four years and the third consecutive winning campaign since Kiffin took over in 2020. Now for the exciting part: the 2024-25 version of the Mississippi Rebels might just be the best in program history, entering the season ranked No. 6 overall. With heightened expectations, the team’s season win total odds are set at 9.5 games at the online sportsbook. Additionally, with the College Football Playoff field now expanded, the Rebels are -136 favorites to secure a ticket to the show. Things are certainly looking up for Ole Miss as they enter the regular season, aiming to take another step forward and possibly bring a national championship back to Oxford for the first time since 1960.

A Case for the Over: As potent last year’s offense proved to be with it shredding opposing defenses for upwards of 460 yards (No. 12) and north of 35 points (No. 17) per game, the Rebels still went on to cash under tickets at a 7-6 clip. The primary reason was a defense that held its and proved to be far from a pushover save for when running up against elite conference opponents. Defensive line standouts J.J. Pegues and Jared Ivey return, and their jobs will be made easier by the significant transfer additions of NT Nolen Walter from Texas A&M and LB Princely Umanmielen from Florida. The linebacker core welcomes back two starters, Khari Coleman and Suntarine Perkins, who will be joined by transfer Chris Paul, a tackling machine while manning a post for the Arkansas Razorbacks. The secondary has been bolstered by portal additions to complement holdovers Trey Washington and John Saunders. Only six starters return from last year’s middling defense, but the offseason additions could transform this unit into a formidable force for the Rebels.
A Case for the Under: The offense looks solid at the quarterback and wide receiver positions with Jaxson Dart aiming to build upon a fantastic junior campaign where he threw for over 3,300 yards with a stellar 23:5 TD/INT ratio. He’ll likely have an excellent shot to improve those stats with the main heavy hitter of his receiving corps returning. Tre Harris, who led the team with 985 yards and 8 TDs, is back as the WR1, while Caden Prieskorn aims to become one of the SEC’s best tight ends coming over from Memphis. However, the offense faces uncertainty on the offensive line and in the backfield. The line needs to integrate three transfers, and the backfield must replace 1,000+ yard rusher Quinshon Judkins, who left for Ohio State. The running game will rely on a mix of a veteran holdover and two transfers. If the new-look O-Line struggles to gel, it might not matter how potent the passing game is. A step back in the front wall’s execution could make it challenging for the team to overcome the highest win total of the Kiffin era.

Looking at the Rebels' 2024 regular season schedule, it can be argued they’ll only be installed underdogs twice. The first instance comes in mid-October when they hit the road for the second straight week to face the LSU Tigers in Death Valley. The second will be in early November when the Georgia Bulldogs visit Vaught-Hemingway Stadium for a game that just might have ESPN College GameDay in town. Other than those two matchups, Ole Miss is likely to be favored in its remaining games. Based on this outlook before the season even begins, oddsmakers are predicting a 10-win campaign for the Rebels; a tally good enough to just surpass the current impost. While the SEC is notoriously tough, the Rebs’ overall slate looks quite favorable on paper. There’s no Texas, Alabama, Auburn, Tennessee, Missouri, or Texas A&M on the docket. With upper-echelon teams possibly not going all out, knowing that a slip-up or two would still allow for entrance into the expanded College Football Playoff, it wouldn’t be surprising to me if Mississippi went undefeated. You know Kiffin will be gunning for it in a position to do so. Given this favorable schedule and the potential for a strong season, I'm locking in an over flier and wouldn't be shocked to see the Rebels come out one of a few unforeseen undefeateds.
