If asked to describe the North Carolina State Wolfpack under Dave Doeren’s watch, the first adjective that comes to mind should be "consistent." Except for his inaugural campaign in Raleigh and the 2019 season, NC State has won at least seven games and punched a ticket to the bowl season nine times. That same consistency occurred last year when the Wolfpack tallied nine regular season wins, surpassing its 7-game win total odds with relative ease. The third-place finish and the program's trajectory under the coaching staff have linemakers at the online sportsbook bullish on the upcoming season, with the win total set at 8.5 games. The CFB futures betting market also appears optimistic about the Wolfpack, much like this past year’s basketball team, making noise when it matters most. Does this mean College Football bettors should pencil in the Wolfpack as the dark horse favorites that could challenge Florida State, Miami, Clemson, and Louisville for ACC bragging rights? Should they do that, the 2024-25 campaign could go down as a season of firsts: an ACC title game appearance and possibly a College Football Playoff berth!

A Case for the Over: The key to success for what was a below-average offense was the unit’s ability to maintain possession and maximize its talent. North Carolina State only turned the ball over an average of 1.3 times (No. 45) and scored 26.2 points per game (No. 72) despite boasting the nation’s No. 95 ranked total offense, which averaged just north of 350 yards per game. The defense played a huge role in the scoring output, forcing nearly 2.0 takeaways per game (No. 8). Brennan Armstrong was serviceable in his one year navigating the Wolfpack’s attack, mainly due to his dual-threat ability, but he only threw for 1,785 yards with a pedestrian 11:7 TD/INT ratio. Enter former Chanticleer Grayson McCall, who feels like he's in his tenth year of eligibility. When healthy, McCall has proven to be lethal and extremely accurate, with a career total of 88 touchdown passes and only 14 interceptions over 42 games. With WR Kevin Concepcion back for his junior campaign and Duke RB Jordan Waters, fresh off a near 1,000 scrimmage yard and 12 TD campaign, the pieces are in place to revitalize the running game. Working behind one of the ACC’s best offensive lines, which returns four starters from last year’s dominant unit, the offense is set to be the strength of this year’s team. Unlike last year, the offense will be relied upon to stockpile the wins needed to exceed expectations for the second consecutive year.
A Case for the Under: Huge losses have been incurred on the defensive side of the ball, starting with Payton Wilson, considered one of the best linebackers in college football. Wilson was a warrior for the program throughout his five seasons in Raleigh, racking up 402 tackles, 48 for a loss, and 15 sacks, six of which were accrued last season. Additionally, the unit loses its second leading tackler, Jaylon Scott. While Devan Boykin and Aydan White return to anchor the secondary, the defensive line will heavily rely on transfer portal acquisitions and holdovers to compensate for the losses of players now suiting up on Sundays. Last year’s defense was relentless in forcing turnovers, accruing sacks, and being a stonewall on third down. This was a significant factor in the team managing to win nine games for the second time in the last three seasons. With so much turnover, it’s tough to envision Doeren and his staff conjuring up the voodoo necessitated to replicate last year's defensive outputs.

Linemakers already have the Pack catching points against Tennessee in a neutral bout during the second week of the season, as well as in the Week 4 showdown in Death Valley, where they’ll attempt to scalp Dabo’s Tigers for the second year in a row and third in the last four. Other than that, NC State is likely to be favored in its other 10 games, provided the injury bug doesn’t wreak havoc. The pedigree and consistency are enough for me to believe the Wolfpack has what it takes to be a major player in the ACC title race this college football betting season. McCall has proven time and time again that he is a winner, so I firmly expect his presence to energize the lethargic offensive attack of a season ago. While the defense only returns five starters from last year’s stout unit, I have faith in Doeren and his staff to mold the replacements into a formidable group, as they have done routinely under his watch. I don’t think there’s a runaway leader among the favorites to cash in on the ACC futures odds this season. If ever there was a time for the Wolfpack to find its way into the conference title game, this would be it. Give me a piece of that over!
