The Mountain West Conference has become the territory of the San Diego State Aztecs and Boise State Broncos. Since 2014 they have each won two Mountain West Conference Championships. Furthermore, they are the two favorites to again meet in the Mountain West Conference Championship Game for the first time ever. That has been the great irony of their respective success stories. Each time San Diego State or Boise State made the MWC title game the other team would fail to qualify. For example, last year the upstart Fresno State Bulldogs made the MWC title tilt before going down to a tough 17-14 loss to Boise State.

Jeff Tedford Sparks Fresno State Resurgence
Fresno State is again expected to fight San Diego State for the West Division title. For sure the Bulldogs were one of the great success stories in all of college football last year. Jeff Tedford, who did much to get the California program back to respectability, took over a program that had a winning tradition but was run into the ground by Tim DeRuyter. In fact, the program collapsed to 4-16 in his final 20 games before DeRuyter was mercifully canned. Yet Tedford turned things around in his first season as coach with a record of 10-4 straight up and 11-2-1 vs. the line. Best of all much of the core that led to Fresno State’s success returns for the 2018 season including quarterback Marcus McMaryion.
Broncos Busting Out as Top Group of Five Team
For well over a decade Boise State has been among the best teams in what is now known as the Group of Five. Boise State returns 15 starters from last year’s championship squad. Senior quarterback Brett Rypien leads the returning starters along with 1000-yard rusher Alexander Mattison. Just as important is that most of the solid defense from last season is also coming back. Head coach Bryan Harsin has proven to be the right fit in replacing Chris Peterson. His team has a favorable schedule that includes home games against San Diego State, Colorado State, Fresno State, and Utah State.
Winning the Old Fashioned Way in San Diego
For fans of old school smashmouth traditional football San Diego State is appointment viewing. Head coach Rocky Long likes to combine strong defense with a power running game as his formula for success. Rising Star Juwan Washington is the latest back likely to put up big numbers for the Aztecs. Additionally, SDSU should have the best offensive line in the game. Everyone should circle their calendars for November 18 when Fresno State hosts San Diego State. It is likely the West Division title will be on the line.
Bobo Reloads or Rebuilds
The Colorado State Rams have gone 7-6 for three consecutive seasons under coach Mike Bobo and now face the prospect of just nine starters returning. One thing for sure is that we are going to learn just how effective Bobo’s recruiting efforts have been. The Rams are getting some love to make a bowl but others believe they are overrated with far too many questions to answer.
Rebels Rising
Fourth year head coach Tony Sanchez has the program heading in the right direction. The Rebels just missed a bowl last year losing four games by ten points or less. If their defense can simply become average quarterback Armani Rogers should get them to a bowl game.

Fresno State won’t catch anyone napping this season while San Diego State is solid and proven. However, Boise State has a Power Five look and the most favorable schedule.
