The great irony of the Pac 12 Conference when it comes to football is that the USC Trojans are the marquee brand and historic traditional power. And certainly, the Men of Troy established supremacy last year with a 31-28 win over the Stanford Cardinal in the Pac 12 Championship Game. Yet Stanford remains the all-time winner of the Pac 12 in its current format. The Cardinal has compiled a total of four appearances in the Pac 12 Title Game and three wins. Furthermore, last year was USC’s first ever appearance in the event. All of which begs the question as to whether or not they are back on their way as the traditional marquee and standard of the league or were merely one hit wonders. The Washington Huskies join Stanford and USC as favorites to win the league.

Pac 12’s Quest for Respect
Last year was an undeniably bad one for the Pac 12 Conference and calls into question whether Larry Scott is the right man to continue to lead the league after being hired from Women’s Professional Tennis. At first Scott was seen as a cutting-edge innovator for a league that was derided as stuck in the past and not forward thinking. But over the years Scott has presided over a decline in football and a Pac 12 Network that lacks reach and cache. In 2017 the Pac 12 failed to produce a playoff team and was 1-8 straight up in bowl games. In sum It’s hardly the stuff of bragging rights.
Will Washington Lead Conference Resurgence?
If there is a team that can regain Pac 12 Conference respect it is the Washington Huskies. They are far and away the consensus pick to win the league due to 16 starters returning under respected head coach Chris Peterson. Quarterback Jake Browning and running back Myles Gaskin will ignite a high-octane offensive attack with seniors Trey Adams and Kaleb McGary anchoring a powerful O-line. But as great as the offense should be nothing tops the rock-ribbed Washington defense that may be among the very best nationally. The season opener in Atlanta vs. Auburn will set the tone early for U-Dub.
Stanford Getting Defensive
Stanford is the team picked to challenge Washington in the North Division but their defense is rebuilding and has a lot of questions. The offense features a dominant line and Heisman Trophy candidate Bryce Love. Still, the defensive questions make Washington the better-looking choice in the North.
USC Leads Competitive South Division
USC head coach Clay Helton still lacks the love despite winning the league last year and the Rose Bowl the season before that. There has always been the sense among Trojan faithful that SC could have done better. Yet despite the disrespect Helton has methodically improved the team. Helton’s biggest challenge is replacing Sam Darnold at quarterback. But he will have a strong offensive line and ground game to ease the transition. And the USC defense will be among the best in the Pac 12.
Arizona is getting a lot of hype due to superstar quarterback Khalil Tate but questions remain about their depth and defense compared to USC. Utah is tough but simply not as talented as the Trojans.
