There is a great irony about the defending National Champion and SEC Heavyweight Alabama Crimson Tide. Despite winning the national title game in overtime over the actual SEC Champion Georgia Bulldogs the Tide was not even the winner of its own West Division. That honor went to the Auburn Tigers after Bama’s hated arch rival defeated them in the Iron Bowl earlier that season. Furthermore, the Crimson Tide has twice won the national championship without even winning the SEC. Which leads into this year’s evaluation. Alabama is certainly the best team in the West. While Georgia has emerged as the power of the East. And the Bulldogs are doing it Alabama Style!

College Football Odds to win SEC: Season Kicks off Saturday, August 25, 2018
College Football Odds to win the SEC Championship at Bookmaker.eu: Alabama -137, Auburn +842, Georgia +247, LSU +2034, Missouri +3539, Tennessee +10000, Vanderbilt +50000, Arkansas +27500, Florida +1290, Kentucky +30000, Mississippi State +1498, South Carolina +3271, Texas A&M +3271
One legitimate criticism of the SEC is that it is top heavy with two powerful teams in Alabama and Georgia followed by a couple of fairly good teams like LSU and Auburn with the rest of the league being relatively mediocre.
Georgia Rises to Make SEC Dynamic Duo
It’s no accident that Alabama and Georgia are the prohibitive favorites to meet in the SEC Championship Game. Georgia head coach Kirby Smart was Nick Saban’s defensive coordinator for several years at Alabama and was a devoted student of the entire Crimson Tide program. In fact he and Saban have since had a falling out due to how well Smart has copy catted Saban from recruiting to playing style.
Georgia may be the most talented team in the league, even with some significant departures from last year’s team. Smart has so completely flipped the recruiting that the Bulldogs are going to be a team that reloads instead of rebuilds for years to come. Besides that, the rest of the SEC East is in transition or outright decline.
Gator Chomp Stars Soon
Dan Mullen had a highly successful run as Mississippi State head coach but departed for Florida where he was offensive coordinator for the two national championship teams led by Urban Meyer and Tim Tebow. Florida has struggled offensively and at quarterback ever since Tebow departed. Mullen should certainly fix that if not this year than probably next.
Roll Tide
Quarterback hero of the national championship game Tua Tagovailoa should be the starter over Jalen Hurts despite coach Saban’s games and coyness. When it comes to recruiting Saban is King and has his pick of the best players from all over the country. Furthermore “The Process” is now firmly in place for over a decade and has made this program a literal machine.
Goofy Gus?
On one hand Auburn had a successful year as they beat Bama and won the West. But they stunk up the joint in their SEC Championship Game loss to Georgia and were then shocked by Group of Five Central Florida in their New Year’s Day bowl game loss. This is emblematic of the program under Malzahn with its inconsistency that features incredible big time wins and dumbfounding losses. Malzahn was nearly fired last year but actually ended up with a huge new contract instead. Yet he can be right back on the firing line in short order with a week one loss to powerful Washington in Atlanta.

This year the obvious is the best choice. Georgia and Alabama are at a whole other level from the rest of the teams in the SEC. LSU is hopeless at quarterback and Texas A&M is not quite ready to challenge but will soon likely be with coach Jimbo Fisher having a blank check book to work with. The difference maker will be Tua Tagovailoa as Bama quarterback. Alabama must be considered the team to beat in the SEC.
