We’ve seen several games shift around on the line in the early going of the college football betting week. None has been more volatile than the Pac-12 showdown between the Oregon Ducks and Washington State Cougars. We don’t typically see lines jump the fence, and we rarely see that happen twice. But it did for this matchup. Wazzou opened as 2-point favorite but the line was quickly wagered in Oregon’s favor and hopped to OU -1 shortly after hitting the board. The spread reached -2 before taking a reversal and heading in the other direction as the wagering started to even out. The line currently stands at WSU -3 and will likely bounce around more before kickoff.
The chaos didn’t stop there, however. Upwards of 10 games have shifted by at least three-points and two others jumped the fence. Toledo went from a 3-point favorite to a 1-point dog for its matchup with Buffalo. We also saw UAB open as a 1-point favorite against North Texas before the line was wagered to UNT -1. Here’s look at some of the biggest movers in early Week 8 betting action at BookMaker.eu.
Week 8 Major Line Moves
Central Florida at East Carolina
Opening Line: UCF -24
Current Line: UCF -21
Not only are the Knights looking for respect for their play on the field, they’re searching for it at the betting window. UCF remained unbeaten and won its 19th straight game, but it wasn’t as easy as most of the Ws in the streak have been. The Knights overcame a 16-point deficit to knock off Memphis last week, but failed to cover the 5-point line. ECU is coming off a pair of beatdowns at the hands of Temple and Houston, losing both against a double-digit line. Still, backers are liking the three touchdowns against an unreliable favorite. The early action is finding the Pirates, but when bettors come to their senses, throwing down on the visitors looks like easy money.
Maryland at Iowa
Opening Line: Iowa -13
Current Line: Iowa -10
Another overvalued team on the opening line is the Iowa Hawkeyes, who were laying 13 points when the spread hit the board. With the public pounding Maryland, the line slipped by a field goal to its current number. Iowa rebounded from its lone loss of the season by slapping double-digit losses on Minnesota and Indiana on the road, moving their ATS record for the season to 5-1. So the 13-point opening line seemed reasonable, until it didn’t. Despite all the turmoil surrounding the Terps program, they’ve put together a solid season. The win over Texas in the opener looks much better now and UM hung with Michigan for more than a half. Getting 10 points on the road is reasonable and doable.
Tulsa at Arkansas
Opening Line: Arkansas -3.5
Current Line: Arkansas -7
Is this a case of another bad Power 5 team getting the benefit of the doubt over a G5 program? Maybe, but 93 percent of the betting public can’t be wrong, can they? There is good news for one team since a losing streak will end. The Hogs have lost six straight following a season-opening victory and the Golden Hurricane has been a light breeze losing five straight. In a matchup of teams that are headed nowhere fast I guess the Power 5 club gets the benefit of the doubt. With memories of losses to Colorado State and North Texas still vivid, the Hogs opened as a 3.5-point favorite. However, the public spoke loudly with its support of the home team and the spread spiked to -7. Tulsa nearly handed South Florida a loss last week and fell by seven to Texas earlier, so they aren’t as bad as the record indicates.
