The last few weeks of the college football season weren’t kind for my parlays so I’ll make another run on championship week. With the regular season complete it’s time for the conferences across America to determine a titlist with 10 league championship games on tap in Week 14. The best of the bunch is likely the Pac-12 matchup between top 5 teams Washington and Oregon. With a win the undefeated Huskies are guaranteed a spot in the College Football Playoff. The Ducks have a chance at the CFP but need to avenge their only loss. Back in Week 7 the teams played a thriller with Oregon staying within the 3.5-point spread in the 36-33 loss. The Ducks caught fire after that opening as a 10-point favorite at crypto sportsbooks.
Four of the championship games opened with a spread of 10 points or more, the most significant in the Big Ten with Michigan laying 23.5 points to Iowa. And this is why conferences around the country eliminated division formats. The de facto title game took place last week with UM beating Ohio State. Reaching the CFP with an undefeated record for the second straight season is just a formality for the Wolverines. Two years ago the schools met in the Big Ten championship with Michigan winning 42-3 as an 11.5-point favorite. The closest games according to oddsmakers are in the ACC and Mountain West. The Jordan Travis injury had an impact on Florida State’s line as a 2.5-point favorite over Louisville. Two of the tri-champs in the MWC square off in Las Vegas with Boise State laying 2.5-points to host UNLV.
Just like the conference my Pac-12 parlay last week disappeared in a hurry. It appears as though the Ducks are on a mission that even the Civil War matchup couldn’t derail. I backed OSU at +13.5 and though the Beavers pulled within 14-7 late in the first half, the Ducks scored just 44 seconds later ruining any chances of an upset or cover. Trusting UCLA’s offense in its game with Cal was a huge mistake. Three giveaways and three turnovers on downs eliminated any chance of that game cashing the OVER. My pride was salvaged by backing Arizona -10.5 in their 59-23 romp over ASU.

I’ll admit I was shocked to see Oregon as a 10-point favorite for the Pac-12 title game. The Ducks have been the better team since Washington’s Week 7 triumph, but the Huskies have shown resiliency winning a number of close games since. And they always seem to rise to the occasion behind Michael Penix Jr. With a CFP berth on the line I expect the Huskies to catch fire offensively after tallying just 24 and 22 points in their last two victories. If anything this game should be watched for the pure entertainment factor since Penix Jr. and Bo Nix have put on shows in the previous two matchups, which were won by the Huskies.
The teams didn’t play during the season, which is why the MWC needed computer rankings to determine its championship game participants. UNLV was guaranteed a spot since its overall body of work was superior to that of Boise State and San Jose State, even though the Rebels lost to SJSU last week. Because of that had the Spartans finished with a better ranking than BSU the game would be in San Jose. Hmm, San Jose or Vegas? Conspiracy theories aside this should be a good matchup with both averaging more than 32 points. They like tempo with extra possessions giving the OVER a good shot at hitting.
The Big Ten championship is the best reason for eliminating divisions. Sure Iowa is 10-2 but the West stunk with Northwestern and Wisconsin the others finishing above .500. Iowa’s only game against a top team from the East was a 31-0 loss to Penn State. With the inability to score the Hawkeyes will have to be more aggressive on defense leaving opening for J.J. McCarthy to exploit. It’s a big spread but one UM can certainly cover.
