As the old saying goes being close only counts in horse shoes and hand grenades. It certainly doesn’t apply when betting a college football parlay. I came close on last week’s picks missing out on a three-team winner when Air Force and Sam Houston State failed to go over the closing total of 36.5, which was lower than the 38 points I bought the game at Crypto Sportsbook. And they weren’t even close with the Falcons eking out a 13-3 victory. I hit two winners backing favorites. Oklahoma State was laying 3-points to Arizona State and after a brief scare the Pokes covered the line. OSU fell behind 15-7 early in the second quarter before closing on a 20-0 spurt to win 27-15. I also backed Oregon -7 for their matchup with Texas Tech. The line came down to 4.5, but the Ducks cleared the spread in their 38-30 triumph. As you know every wager in a parlay has to hit in order to win so I’ll give it a go again in Week 3.

What’s going down at Michigan State with coach Mel Tucker being suspended, and by most accounts likely fired, has to have a rippling effect with the team. And it’s not a good time to be concerned about off field shenanigans with the Washington Huskies next on the slate. The Spartans did what they had to beating weaker opponents Central Michigan and Richmond by a combined score of 76-21 with payouts in each, but this matchup is on a much grander scale with the Huskies boasting one of the top offenses in college football.
I wasn’t sold on Michigan State before the season and two wins haven’t swayed my opinion. They had a similar start last season beating Western Michigan and Akron soundly before a 39-28 setback at Washington as a 3.5-point dog. Sparty was just 3-7 SU and 2-8 ATS against Power 5 programs last season, all but the U-Dub contest within the Big Ten. And they’re arguably a worse team with several players transferring over the summer.
Kansas amassed 539 total yards and 34 points against last season’s top scoring defense beating Illinois 34-23 with an attack that saw Jalon Daniels go 21 of 29 with 277 yards and two TD passes and Devin Neal run for 120 yards and a score on just 10 carries. The Jayhawks picked up where they left off last season with impressive offensive numbers and face a team that just got blasted at home, 33-6, by FCS Idaho. It’s been a struggle for the Wolf Pack getting outscored 99-20 in their first two games.
The problem with this game is I need Nevada to score a few points to cash the OVER. Kansas will do its part with an offense that averages 530 yards and 41 points. And they may reach the total on their own. But it would be nice for the Pack to chip in. The OVER is 7-1-1 in the last nine Kansas games.
The final pick on my three-way parlay involves a SEC matchup between Georgia and South Carolina. The Gamecocks were the last team to win between the hedges taking down the Dawgs in overtime back in the 2019 season as a 21-point underdog. Since then UGA has wins of 29, 27 and 41 points going 2-1 ATS. This will be the first true test for the two-time defending champs after knocking off UT-Martin 48-7 and Ball State 45-3. One trend favoring South Carolina is that the road team is 7-0 ATS in the last seven meetings. And Georgia has been evenly split when facing a large line. The Dawgs are 0-2-1 ATS in their last three games when laying at least 24 points and 3-5-1 ATS in their last nine such games.
