It has only been one week, but the Heisman Trophy odds have already moved with Oklahoma quarterback Jalen Hurts surging into immediate contention. Hurts had six touchdowns, three passing and three rushing, in a 49-31 win over Houston last week. He threw for 332 yards and was extremely impressive in Oklahoma’s season-opening win over Houston. Hurts is right behind Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa and Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence in the latest Heisman Trophy odds.

Top Three Contenders
The Heisman Trophy race already looks like a three-man race after just one week. There are three clear top contenders in Tagovailoa, Lawrence and Hurts. Although Tua and Lawrence are listed as co-favorites in Heisman Odds, you can make a case that Hurts should be listed above both of them. Hurts has already taken over the top spot in the recent ESPN Heisman poll after Week 1.
Tua Tagovailoa is third in this week’s ESPN poll. He threw for 336 yards and four TDs in the win over Duke. He didn’t even play the fourth quarter and still put up big numbers.
Lawrence dropped to No. 6 in this week’s ESPN poll. He didn’t play well in the opener, as he had two interceptions. It is way too early to throw out Lawrence as a Heisman contender, but he should be listed behind Tua and Hurts, even though the current Heisman odds don’t reflect that fact.

Other Contenders
The best offensive player for Clemson in their opener was not Lawrence, but running back Travis Etienne. He is up to No. 2 in this week’s ESPN Heisman poll. He rushed for 205 yards in a win over Georgia Tech. Etienne could be an interesting choice in Heisman odds at +1500.
Another running back that had a good Week 1 was Wisconsin’s Jonathan Taylor. He had four touchdowns in Wisconsin’s win over South Florida. Taylor is listed at No. 4 in this week’s ESPN Heisman poll. Taylor will get a lot of chances to impress voters, but it should be noted that Taylor has rarely stayed healthy.
Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields threw for four TDs and rushed for another in Ohio State’s win over Florida Atlantic. Fields is now definitely on the radar in terms of Heisman odds. Fields will have a lot of chances to impress on an Ohio State team that could be a national title contender.
Longshots
A quarterback that very few people were talking about before the season in terms of Heisman odds is LSU’s Joe Burrow. He tied an LSU single-game record with five TD passes before halftime in a big win over Georgia Southern. Even though Burrow is now on the radar, he is really not a serious contender yet.
A better longshot might be Georgia running back D’Andre Swift. He had 149 yards in a win over Vanderbilt and he already looks to be more important to Georgia than quarterback Jake Fromm.
Wide receivers rarely win the Heisman, but Alabama has a good one in Jerry Jeudy. He had 137 yards and a TD in Alabama’s opening win. He is already listed as Mel Kiper’s No. 1 NFL Draft prospect for 2020. Wide receivers need a lot to go right to win the Heisman but Jeudy’s odds of +9500 are attractive.
After the first week of the college football season there is no question that the value is on Hurts and Etienne. Oklahoma has had the last two Heisman winners in Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray and it could be the Sooners make it three straight, but for the moment Tua is still slightly ahead of Hurts in Heisman odds.
