NCAA Football Results - Week 13 College Betting Recap

Week 13 was of course touted as “Rivalry Weekend” and justifiably so as many of the best and most historic rivalries did indeed take place. This week we’ll take a look at the implications of week 13 as it was the most relevant week of the college football season so far. Indeed, the Ohio State Buckeyes and Michigan Wolverines met not just in “The Game” but also a virtual playoff game. Beyond that gamblers were stunned at Ohio State rag-dolling the Maize and Blue. However, that was just one of several games that had a lot of meaning to gamblers and fans. Additionally, the firing squad is prepping for what could be a blood bath in the coaching ranks. Let’s take a look at what was an eventful Week and why it was a reminder why nothing can compare to college football.

Urban Renewal

This was supposed to be the year for the Michigan Wolverines to finally exercise their demons against the Ohio State Buckeyes. The betting public was sold on the Maize and Blue as 4.5-point road chalks. Ohio State was reeling both on defense and with head coach Urban Meyer nearing a total crackup. It was no contest. The underdog Buckeyes dismantled the nation’s top ranked defense in a 62-39 win that had the Horseshoe rocking in what was one of the most memorable wins in this rivalry of all time. OSU has flipped the script and ripped the Big Ten East Division title from Michigan. Consequently, the Buckeyes will be a huge favorite against the Northwestern Wildcats this Saturday. Should chalk hold, Urban Meyer’s team has a real shot at the college football playoff. For Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh it was a humiliating fourth straight loss in four games against Meyer as his team was outclassed and outcoached.

The Dome is Golden

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish punched their ticket to the college football playoff with a 24-17 win at the USC Trojans as 14-point overlays. In a tough environment against a talented team with nothing to lose the Irish prevailed with a gritty performance. Dame finished 12-0 straight up and lost just four games against the line. They are now off until New Year’s Day and the playoff round. Meanwhile USC coach Clay Helton is facing cries for his firing by high noon although it now appears that he is safe.

Boomer Sooner

The Oklahoma Sooners won a tremendously exciting 59-56 shootout at the West Virginia Mountaineers as three points chalks. As a result, the Sooners get a revenge rematch against the Texas Longhorns in the Big 12 Championship Game. Oklahoma’s Heisman Trophy candidate quarterback Kyle Murray threw for 364 yards and three touchdowns while adding 114 more yards on the ground. Of major concern is that the Sooners “defense” allowed 704 yards of total offense. The Mounties lost their final two games to blow what was a sure shot at the Big 12 Championship Game. Head coach Dana Holgorsen may want to be job hunting soon as WVU may have gone as far as it can with him at the helm.

Clawless Cougs

The Washington State Cougars also blew a shot for a division title on their home field in a bitter 28-15 loss to the hated rival Washington Huskies in the Apple Cup game. Wazzu was a 2.5-point chalk. The Cougars came up flat in the snow storm against a U-Dub team that proved to be overrated this year. Like Jim Harbaugh at Michigan, Washington State head coach Mike Leach is yet to crack the code against Washington’s Chris Peterson.

Wisconsin Quits at Home

The Wisconsin Badgers ended their season in the same sloppy inattentive manner that took them down early on after being favored to make the college football playoff. Wisky was humiliated in a 37-15 home loss to the Minnesota Golden Gophers as 12-point home chalks. Worse yet, the Gophers stormed the field to take Paul Bunyan’s Axe for the first time since 2004. While both teams will bowl Minnesota has much more upside with a team loaded with freshmen. For Wisky coach Paul Chryst it is time for considerable soul searching as his veteran offense failed him miserably.
