Opening line shifts for Week 6 of the College Football season have been plentiful, but they haven’t been significant. We’ve seen movement in a number of games, however just few by more than a field goal. That’s an indication that oddsmakers are for the most part in line with how the betting public sees this week’s games.
There are three games featuring ranked teams this week, and as expected we’ve some shifting in the opening line. No. 5 LSU opened as a 2.5-point favorite for its SEC tilt at No. 22 Florida with early action on the Bayou Bengals moving the line to -3. There is plenty of anticipation for this edition of the Red River Rivalry with No. 7 Oklahoma and No. 19 Texas tied atop the Big 12 standings. Tom Herman is starting to make believers of Horns backers with the line dropping from the opening OU -7.5 to -7.
Here are some of the biggest movers in early Week 6 betting action at BookMaker.eu.
Week 6 Major Line Moves
Tulsa at Houston
Opening Line: Houston -15.5
Current Line: Houston -18
Houston has one of the most potent offenses in the country scoring at least 45 points in each of its last four outings and dropping 70 in a rout of Texas State last week. The Cougars leaky defense likely led to the line opening at -15.5, but with the support of the betting public, the spread shot up to -18. The rebuilding of the Tulsa program continues and the growing pains are evident again this season. They caught Texas at a good time earlier this season, losing 28-21 as a 22.5-point dog, but they lost the last two and are just 1-3 ATS. Houston has a couple of big wins at home and should take care of the Golden Hurricane. It would be wise to jump on this one before the line goes even higher.
Nebraska at Wisconsin
Opening Line: Wisconsin -21.5
Current Line: Wisconsin -18
One of the bigger line shifts of the week so far took place in this matchup, and it’s a bit of a head-scratcher. The line has moved in favor of the winless Cornhuskers, who hit the road to take on the Badgers. Bucky hasn’t been exactly tearing it up lately. They lost their last home game to BYU and had to come from behind to beat Iowa in a game they easily could have lost. That pushed a lot of sharp action in favor of the Huskers, who are also winless against the spread this season. The Badgers are coming off a bye and they looked like they got back on track with a big road win over the Hawkeyes their last time out. Bucky is 0-3 ATS at home and Nebraska is a wreck. The spread could move back up before kickoff.
Notre Dame at Virginia Tech
Opening Line: Notre Dame -4.5
Current Line: Notre Dame -6.5
No matter what the Hokies do the rest of the season, they’ll be remembered for losing to Old Dominion. That defeat scared off a lot of backers and with the resurgent Irish coming into town, the line spiked a few points from its opening. Notre Dame looks like a legitimate CFP contender with Ian Book running the offense, settling the group after some inconsistent play from Brandon Wimbush. And the Irish have a few quality victories under their belt with wins over Michigan and Stanford. The public is backing Notre Dame with 77 percent of the early action on the visitors, but beware, the Irish have played just one road game and VT is still salty about that upset loss to ODU. Beating a highly-ranked foe will help fade those memories.
Illinois at Rutgers
Opening Line: Illinois -1.5
Current Line: Illinois -6
The jump in the line is all about how bad Rutgers is and has nothing to do with the Illini. The Scarlet Knights were thumped by Kansas, 55-14, and Buffalo, 42-13, in consecutive weeks. At least they’ve been consistent, ranking 128th in the FBS in scoring and 107th in points allowed. The Illini haven’t been much better this season, but they are getting 66 percent of the action and the opening line of Illinois -1 was too good to pass on. The early play forced the biggest spike of the week so far with the line moving to -6.
