Oklahoma Sooners Win Total Odds Analysis

Oklahoma Sooners Win Total Odds Analysis

The Oklahoma Sooners are on a ridiculous run at quarterback, as they have produced the past two No. 1 overall picks in the NFL draft. Baker Mayfield earned the top spot in 2018 and Kyler Murray was the pick in April. It’s not easy to replace that type of talent but Oklahoma is confident it can keep things rolling offensively with the transfer addition of former Alabama quarterback Jalen Hurts. Oklahoma is expected to be one of the best teams in the country again after making it to the College Football Playoff a season ago.

Oklahoma Sooners Win Total Odds Analysis

The current college football odds are a great indicator surrounding Oklahoma, as the Sooners are projected to be one of the best teams in the country once again. They need to play well to hit the “over” as it would mean only one regular season loss. The Sooners begin the year with non-conference matchups against Houston, South Dakota and UCLA.

The Big 12 slate begins with a matchup against Texas Tech, followed by a game against Kansas and a huge showdown with Texas. The Longhorns dealt Oklahoma its only regular season loss of 2018 and these are the two best teams in the conference once again. Oklahoma follows that up with games against West Virginia, Kansas State and Iowa State. The season wraps up with matchups against Baylor, TCU and a road game against Oklahoma State.

The schedule is not overwhelmingly tough, but the Sooners do not have much room for error if they want to hit the “over” on the win total.

Oklahoma Odds

The expectations are once again sky-high for the Sooners. There was a big hole at quarterback after Murray’s defection but Hurts is more than capable of filling it. He was beaten out by Tua Tagaovailoa with the Crimson Tide but is still one of the better signal-callers in the country. He will have a great supporting cast of skill players. Oklahoma boasts a star running back duo of Trey Sermons and Kennedy Brooks, while CeeDee Lamb is an explosive weapon at wideout and Grant Calcaterra is an all-conference tight end. The only real concern on offense is on the line, as four starters left for the NFL after doing a great job of keeping Murray protected a year ago.

Oklahoma couldn’t quite reel in the national championship because it had some issues on defense. The Sooners were dead last in college football in pass defense and have to figure out a way to slow down their opponents this year. The good news is that five starters return in the secondary, and the hope is that last year’s experience helps motivate the group. There are nine starters in all returning defensively, highlighted by linebacker Kenneth Murray. Oklahoma is going to put up a lot of points in 2019 but needs the defense to improve to stay in the College Football Playoff hunt.

Key Stats or Trends

Oklahoma finished last season with 11 regular season wins, and even the loss of the No. 1 overall pick in the draft hasn’t dampened expectations. Hurts may not have the same amount of talent as Mayfield or Murray, but he is an experienced college quarterback with a ton of options around him. As long as the offensive line and defense hold up, the Sooners should be among the best teams in the country once again and push to win 11 or 12 games.
