Stanford Cardinal Win Total Odds Analysis

Stanford Cardinal Win Total Odds Analysis

The Stanford Cardinal are ranked in the top-25 in the country by both the coaches and the Associated Press, but the oddsmakers aren’t as excited about this team in 2019. Stanford has a tough schedule and the current college football odds are projecting a season in which the Cardinal finish around .500. The Cardinal have a talented quarterback K.J. Costello but their vaunted running game fell apart a year ago and it needs to bounce back this year.

Stanford Win Total Odds Analysis

If Stanford can get on a roll it has the ability to clear this projected regular season win total, and the “over” is the clear favorite. The Cardinal begin the season with a home game against Northwestern and then quickly jumps into Pac-12 action against USC. Stanford next goes on the road to play Central Florida, as the first three games are incredibly tough compared to some teams who play three cupcakes.

The Cardinal then face off with Oregon, Oregon State, Washington, UCLA, Arizona State and Colorado. The final two conference games are on the road against Washington State and at home against California. Stanford goes outside the Pac-12 in its regular season finale, facing off against Notre Dame.

Even though the Cardinal has a talented team, it is easy to understand why the win total is so low after studying the schedule.

Stanford Odds

Costello led an impressive late-season resurgence in 2018, helping Stanford reel off four straight wins as it ditched a ball-control ground attack and went more to the passing game. Costello will push for more of that but it will be interesting to see if coach David Shaw is willing to change his philosophy. Star running back Bryce Love has departed and the majority of the carries are expected to go to Cameron Scarlett. The passing game loses J.J. Arcega-Whiteside and that is a big-play receiver to replace, although Osiris St. Brown, Connor Wedington and tight end Colby Parkinson should be able to pick up the slack. The offensive line was inconsistent a year ago and needs to be better.

The Stanford defense has traditionally been strong but it took a step back a year ago and needs to improve. The Cardinal will be stung by the loss of standout linebackers Bobby Okereke and Sean Barton. Jovan Swann will be a standout on the defensive line, while Jordan Fox is also able to get after the quarterback. Paulsen Abedo is one of the better cornerbacks in the country and should be able to lock down one side of the field. The other cornerback spot and safety are concerns so Stanford needs to find players to step up.

Key Stats or Trends

Stanford has won eight games or more in every single season since 2009, so clearly a six- or seven-win campaign would be a disappointment. However, the schedule is tough and there are some holes on this roster. The Cardinal have a talented and experienced quarterback in Costello, who is hoping to help the team easily surpass the win total. Stanford would be disappointed with a record that hovers around .500 this year even with tough opponents seemingly every week.
