Week 12 includes a highly important West Division matchup from the American Athletic Conference when the upstart and resurgent SMU Mustangs host the up and down but fully capable Memphis Tigers. SMU has come out of nowhere to contend for the West Division championship and has the tie breaker advantage with the first place Houston Cougars after beating them two weeks ago. But a loss to Memphis would badly damage the Mustangs chances for both the division title and a bowl berth. Memphis was picked to contend for the West Division title but has been let down by their defense.

This game could draw action to both sides for different reasons. Memphis has emerged as one of the more respected teams in the American Athletic Conference despite the fact that they are not meeting expectations this year. Last week Memphis scored a 47-21 win at home over the Tulsa Golden Hurricane as 17-point home chalks. Memphis is a game behind Houston, SMU and Tulane in the West Division race but has already attained bowl eligibility.

Memphis ranks sixth in the nation for scoring offense but that is offset by a defense ranked 86th for points allowed. SMU has improved to 43rd overall for scoring offense but ranks 115th in the nation for points allowed. As usual no matter where he has coached Sonny Dykes has no defense at all.

Memphis quarterback Brady White has a 166.4 rating with 22 touchdown passes and just three interceptions with 9.24 yards per pass. Running back Darrell Henderson has 1446 yards rushing with an eye popping 9.2 yards per carry and 17 touchdowns. Damonte Coxie has 58 receptions fort 949 yards and 16.4 yards per catch with seven touchdowns.
SMU quarterback Ben Hicks has a 132.5 rating with 16 touchdowns and just four interceptions. James Proche has 70 catches for 882 yards and 12.6 yards per reception with nine touchdowns.
