Week nine was not at all chalky with the favorites coming away with the cash in just 26 out of the 56 games on the board. Road warriors were also disappointed in that away teams got the money in just 25 out of 56 games. Meanwhile the undertakers were indeed in mourning as a whopping 38 out of the 56 matchups on the board soared over the total. The biggest underdog to win straight up were the Oregon State Beavers, who stunned the host Colorado Buffaloes on their homecoming in a 41-34 overtime win. The 24.5-point favorite Buffs blew at 31-10 lead which will leave many in an unforgiving mood. Let’s review a stellar week nine of college football betting action.
Defense Arrives Sooner for Oklahoma
The Oklahoma Sooners were the biggest chalk on the board that covered, with a 51-15 home payout over the Kansas State Wildcats as 24.5-point favorites. In their second game under new defensive coordinator Ruffin McNeil OU is showing rapid improvement. Just as impressive has been the play of quarterback Kyler Murray. The first-year starter has Heisman like numbers with a 227 rating and a 28/3 touchdown to interception rate. Once again, the Sooners have the look of a college football playoff team.
The Pirate Cuts Down the Tree
The Washington State Cougars are now the only Pac 12 Conference team with even a remote shot at the playoff. In their biggest win of the season head coach Mike Leach’s Cougs scored a 41-38 win and cover at the Stanford Cardinal as 2.5-point dogs to take full command of the North Division.
U-Dub Disintegrates
Washington State leads the Pac 12 North in large part because the Washington Huskies have become one of the biggest flops on the board for 2018. Washington is coming of an ugly 12-10 loss at the California Golden Bears as 11.5-point chalks. Head coach Chris Peterson was so desperate that he benched former star and now struggling quarterback Jake Browning. The Huskies have come away with the money in just two of their nine games this season. Browning has certainly had his struggles but is also not surrounded with a great supporting cast. This has turned out to be one of the most overrated teams in the land.
Penn State Finally Finishes
The Penn State Nittany Lions snatched defeat from the jaws of victory in a pair of home losses to the Ohio State Buckeyes and Michigan State Spartans earlier in the season. But Penn State held on to get the cash in a 30-24 win over Iowa as 5.5-point chalks. While it was a close call it was also a potential turning point for head coach James Franklin’s team. Quarterback Trace McSorley continues to provide thrills for the Nits as he passed for 167 yards and a touchdown while also adding 63 yards rushing with a TD. For Iowa it was a blown opportunity as Wisconsin has checked out of the Big Ten West Division race.
Wisky Fans Definitely Self Medicating
Speaking of overrated teams, the Wisconsin Badgers may rank first in the nation for that category. Wisconsin slipped to 5-3 straight up and 2-6 against the spread after Saturday’s 31-17 loss at the Northwestern Wildcats as 3.5-point chalks. The Badgers offense that was touted to be a top ten unit has been rendered helpless with a ranking of 57th in the nation for scoring. Most disappointing of all has been the play of an offensive line full of seniors and top NFL draft picks that seems to be reading their own headlines. As for Northwestern they are now in sole possession of first place in the Big Ten West.
Kentucky Continues Dream Season
The Kentucky Wildcats were given up for dead as they trailed the Missouri Tigers 14-3 with 5:18 to play in the game. But U of K added to the sense of inevitability with an astonishing 15-14 win as seven-point chalks. The Wildcats will host the Georgia Bulldogs on Saturday in their biggest game in decades.
