Old School Meets New School
The San Francisco 49ers have to be wondering how different things would have been if they acquired Jimmy Garoppolo in the offseason instead of at mid-season. Jimmy G is undefeated as a starter, leading the 49ers to four straight wins over the last four weeks. Kyle Shanahan has been able to deploy the schemes that made him successful in Atlanta last year with Garoppolo at quarterback. That has helped San Francisco beat good teams like Tennessee and Jacksonville these last two weeks. Now, San Francisco is looking to end its season with one last win against a Los Angeles Rams team that is going to rest a lot of its players....
The Buffalo Bills are facing a must-win situation this week to keep their playoff hopes alive, but even a victory over the Miami Dolphins won’t guarantee a berth. The team would also need at least two of the teams between the Titans, Chargers or Ravens to lose as well....
When the season began, it would have been easy to believe the Houston Texans and Indianapolis Colts could be matchup up in the regular season finale with the division on the line. Instead, both have been hit hard by injury at the quarterback position and are each finishing up disappointing seasons when they meet in Week 17....
The Tennessee Titans have watched their playoff hopes drop from near-certain to completely up in the air. A three-game losing streak has them at this point but the Titans can still sneak in if they can knock off divisional foe the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 17 of the regular season....
The Detroit Lions laid an egg last time out, eliminating their chance at making the playoffs with a loss to the Bengals. It didn’t sound likely at the start of the season but the Lions and Green Bay Packers will face off in Week 17 with nothing on the line....
The Atlanta Falcons’ backs are against the walls, as they need a win in the Week 17 regular season finale over the Carolina Panthers to guarantee a playoff berth. Both of these teams have been solid all year, and it should be a really interesting finale....
It’s been an awful season for the New York Giants. The Giants made the playoffs in 2016 and seemed poised to make an even bigger move this year after some nice additions in the offseason. Rather than make it back to the Super Bowl or even win the division, the Giants took a hard left turn and are sitting at 2-13. They fired former head coach Ben McAdoo a month ago and are now looking to just put an end to their dismal campaign. Don’t expect a big crowd when they welcome the Washington Redskins to town for their season finale....
With just one more win, the New England Patriots will lock up the No. 1 spot in the AFC. The Patriots have dominated the conference during the Brady-Belichick era and are the favorite to claim the AFC yet again. However, we all know how important home field advantage is in the playoffs, and the Patriots don’t want to slip up at the very end and lose it to the Steelers. They will be motivated to beat the New York Jets on Sunday, who can’t wait for this season to be over....
The Minnesota Vikings look set to grab a first-round bye in the NFL Playoffs. A win over the Chicago Bears in Week 17 would lock up the spot. Minnesota has already knocked off Chicago once this season, but that was not an easy victory for the Vikings. They barely squeaked by the Bears 20-17. That was the game where Case Keenum supplanted Sam Bradford as the team’s starter though, and the Vikes have played great ever since then....
The Seattle Seahawks and Dallas Cowboys will both be playing for their postseason lives when they face off in a Week 16 showdown. Seattle is coming off a humbling blowout loss and is in danger of missing the postseason for the first time in several years. Dallas also had plans to return to the playoffs this year but started slowly and need to win and get some help down the stretch....
A last-second loss to the New England Patriots last time out dropped the Pittsburgh Steelers to the No. 2 seed in the AFC, but a strong finish will still earn them a first-round bye. That is important for their goal of reaching the Super Bowl and another victory in Week 16 over the Houston Texans is essential....
The Philadelphia Eagles were able to survive their first game without star quarterback Carson Wentz last week against the Giants. Another win in Week 16 will move them a step closer to clinching the top seed in the NFC....
The Arizona Cardinals and New York Giants both thought they would be making the playoffs this season and instead face each other in Week 16 simply playing out the string. Injuries and inconsistency have helped sink both of these teams and now the focus is mostly on the offseason....
The Carolina Panthers are likely going to make the playoffs, but their seeding will depend on how well they play down the stretch. Carolina still has a chance to win the NFC South and could stay in contention with a win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 16 of the regular season....
The San Francisco 49ers might be the most excited sub-.500 team in the NFL. The team has won all three starts since Jimmy Garoppolo took over as the starting quarterback, considerably brightening up the future. The team would love to keep it rolling in Week 16, but face a tough foe in the Jacksonville Jaguars....
The Washington Redskins have a quarterback but holes elsewhere. The Denver Broncos are strong on defense but don’t have good prospects at quarterback. The two very different teams will face off in Week 16 of the regular season in a game which should be competitive....
The New England Patriots won a thriller over the Steelers last time out to reclaim the top seed in the AFC standings. They can secure it by winning the final two games of the season, which begins with a Week 16 clash at home against the Buffalo Bills....
The NFC South has proven to be the deepest division in the NFL, with three teams on pace to make the playoffs. The divisional title is still up for grabs, and there is a titanic Week 16 clash awaiting between the Atlanta Falcons and New Orleans Saints....
The Los Angeles Chargers missed out on a golden chance to wrest control of the AFC West and strengthen their playoff hopes with a loss to the Chiefs last time out. The Chargers still have a possibility of making the postseason, but those odds have dropped drastically. They will need to win out and get some help in order to keep playing when the regular season ends....
The Kansas City Chiefs picked up a huge win last time out, knocking off the Los Angeles Chargers to regain control of the AFC West. They can clinch the division title with a win over the Miami Dolphins in Week 16 of the regular season....
While the Packers’ playoff hopes were pretty much dashed with a loss last week in Carolina, they will still be a tough for for the Vikings in this one. Minnesota is looking like one of the best teams in the NFL but it’s never easy beating the Packers at Lambeau. The spread is unknown yet because of one very important factor: the presence of Packers star quarterback Aaron Rodgers....
The Tennessee Titans started hot like Los Angeles this season but have fallen off in a big way of late. They need to stop the bleeding in this Week 16 matchup or be at risk of falling out of one of the wild card spots. The Titans are at home, but these are a pair of teams going in opposite directions. The Rams are sizable road favorites as they aim to secure one of the top two seeds in the NFC this year to get a first-round playoff bye....
Detroit has a small path to the postseason and that almost certainly includes winning out these final two weeks, which begins against Cincinnati. While the Lions are the more talented team, the Bengals aren’t far behind and have the home field advantage, so this should be an intriguing matchup. Cincinnati is in a bit of a mess, though, as coach Marvin Lewis is not planning to return in 2018 and the team didn’t play very inspired football last time out....
This is a great way to end the year for Baltimore as a couple of wins could help it secure a playoff berth. The Colts, on the other hand, have been out of the race for a long time as star quarterback Andre Luck never suited up this year. Indianapolis is 3-11 on the season and has lost five in a row coming into this matchup. The Colts will be heavy underdogs as they must go on the road against a superior team....
The Bears will be favored, but not necessarily because of Trubisky. While he has had some good moments in his rookie campaign, he has yet to make a huge impact and the jury is still out as to whether he will be a franchise quarterback. The Browns have a subpar defense and Trubisky would love to take advantage of that in this showdown....
