The reincarnation of the XFL has had a troubled start to say the least. Not only has it had to compete against the new USFL and the AAF, but we have only had five weeks of games since the league was announced in January 2018. The league began play on February 8, 2020, but the season was suspended in mid-March due to the COVID pandemic, and the league underwent some organizational changed that pushed back play to 2023. Finally, the XFL is set to take the field again, and the action will start the week after Super Bowl LVII on February 18, 2023.

2023 XFL Team Previews
Interestingly enough, the best team in 2020 is the biggest longshot to win the 2023 XFL Championship by the football future odds. The Houston Roughnecks went 5-0 with breakout star P.J. Walker, but offensive guru June Jones left the team in order to join the Seattle Sea Dragons as an offensive coordinator. Kurt Benkert was expected to be the starting quarterback, but he decided not to join the league last month, so either Brandon Slivers, Kaleb Eleby, or Cole McDonald will be the signal caller. That doesn’t bode well for Houston although they have two running backs that can make plays in Adrian Killins and Max Borghi.
The favorites to win the title by the XFL futures odds are the St. Louis BattleHawks. This team is coached by former New York Jets tight end Anthony Becht, and they have an experienced quarterback in A.J. McCarron. The national championship winning signal caller at Alabama saw action in 17 games over an NFL career that stretched eight seasons, so there is a lot of buzz surrounding St. Louis as McCarron is widely seen as the most talented quarterback in the league.
Coaches Jim Haslett and June Jones make the Seattle Sea Dragons the team with the second lowest odds to win the XFL Championship. The starting quarterback will either be Steven Montez or Ben DiNucci depending on what Jones is looking for in this offense. Montez can make things happen with his legs, while DiNucci is more of a pocket passer and saw action in the NFL with the Dallas Cowboys.
One of the teams that can make a lot of noise early in the season is the Arlington Renegades. Bob Stoops will likely start Kyle Sloter over Drew Plitt under center as Sloter was the starting quarterback for the USFL’s New Orleans Breakers in 2022, and his year of experience at a similar level could really come in handy. Sloter must not be as turnover prone as he was last season though, as he threw 11 interceptions in nine games.
Hines Ward is the smiling face of the brand new San Antonio Brahmas. This was one of the new teams created after seeing the results of the short-lived 2020 campaign, but there is not much potential here. Kalen Ballage was one of the least efficient running backs in the NFL in recent history, and the quarterback situation is a mess.
The Vegas Vipers are worth keeping an eye on early in the campaign as Luis Perez has a lot of recent experience. Perez was a starting quarterback in the AAF, and he posted solid numbers with the New Jersey Generals last season. He completed 71.7% of his passes for 6.9 YPA with nine touchdowns and an interception, and he has a couple receivers that could be difference makers at this level.
Currently, the most undervalued team in the XFL is the DC Defenders. Jordan Ta’amu was one of the best quarterbacks in the USFL last season despite being behind a bad offensive line in Memphis, and the Defenders have two potentially promising quarterbacks in Eric Dungey and D’Eriq King. This is the team to back early in the season and has a real chance to win it all.
Finally, the Orlando Guardians have the second longest odds to win the XFL title. Former Florida State QB Deondre Francois is likely to be their starting quarterback, but there’s not a lot to like with the talent on this roster. There are some receivers that could have nice seasons, yet Steve Spurrier isn’t the coach, and this could be the worst offense in the XFL.
