Betfred British Masters Golf Matchups - European Tour Odds

Betfred British Masters Golf Matchups

Following a three-week stay in paradise on the Canary Islands the European Tour heads to the British shores to start the UK Swing with the Betfred British Masters. First played in 1946, the tournament has added importance for the Brits on Tour, who view this as their major. The tournament took a hiatus following the 2008 edition, which was the last time at The Belfry. The iconic venue did make an appearance last season hosting the UK Championship, won by Rasmus Hojgaard in extra holes. The stellar field is headed by Robert MacIntyre, who opened as the betting favorite. Tournament host Danny Willett is positioned further down the odds board and is featured in several tournament and round matchups. Need to Know

Part of the allure of the British Masters is its nomadic existence, which takes the field to The Belfry this week. While it’s been over a decade since the Brabazon Course hosted this event, many of the field got a taste of the venue last year when The Belfry hosted the one-off UK Championship. Measured at 7,255 yards, it’s a big change from what the golfers dealt with in the Canary Islands. Those resort layouts yielded a bunch of scores in the -20 range. We likely won’t see that this week since none of the previous four winners at The Belfry scored better than 15-under. Bunkers, water and trees provide ample defense making accuracy an important tool on the relatively flat course. Gaining strokes on the greens will help anyone looking to contend for a win.

Odds Analysis

Laurie Canter -102 vs. Andrew Johnston

We had to do a little research on Canter in order to pick him in this matchup. He had a hard time on the islands with a T40 and T48 in two starts, falling off the radar. But a return home is just what he needs to pick up the pace. He’s done well over his career in the UK and had a strong showing in last year’s swing that included a T13 at The Belfry. That was one of his four top-15s in four straight tournaments that also included a pair of top-5s.

Sami Valimaki +109 vs. Connor Syme

The odds have Valimaki as an underdog in this matchup and I can’t argue with that. He returned to action after a two-month layoff playing the last two events of the island swing going T22-T27. Not bad but also not up to the standards he set during his 2020 rookie of the year campaign. While some players enjoy the resort-style courses others have a hard time adapting. The Finn appears more comfortable on tougher tracks and he gets a chance to show us that this week. At plus-odds I’ll take him in this matchup.

Dean Burmester -112 vs. Danny Willett

Hosting the tournament is an incredible honor but it also has drawbacks. The increased duties take away from the game, which is a reason why past hosts haven’t fared all that well. Toss Willett into that category this week. And it’s not like he was tearing it up recently missing the cut three times in his last four starts. It’s hard to ignore what Burmester did on the Canary Islands with a win and T4 the past two weeks. Burmester has to be bursting with confidence after shooting 44-under over the last eight rounds, impressive even for a resort course.

Martin Kaymer -149 vs. Sam Horsfield

It’s been a few years since Kaymer last won a tournament, but he’s getting close to the form that had him ranked No. 1 in the world not that long ago. He grabbed solo third at the Austrian Open in his last start, his seventh top-10 since the start of 2020. His passion for the game returned after a lull had him on the brink of losing his tour card and a win doesn’t seem too far off. I’ll settle for besting his opponent in this matchup.

Bernd Wiesberger -119 vs. Robert MacIntyre

Wiesberger has spent a lot time lately on the PGA Tour with solid if not spectacular result. He was cruising along at the Masters last month until a closing 78 dropped him to T40. Getting back to his roots with the experience of playing some big-time events in the States should make Wiesberger ready to take on anything that comes his way. He was T5 on this course last year, his best finish of the season. But keep in mind he won three times in 2019, including a pair of Rolex Series events, and that’s enough for me to throw down on him.
