BMW PGA Championship Golf Matchups

The most prestigious event on the European Tour gets solo billing this week with the PGA Tour taking the week off after concluding its playoffs. A few PGA players join an already star-studded field at Wentworth Golf Club in Surrey, England for this week’s BMW PGA Championship. There is plenty at stake with the season winding down. Not only is this the third Rolex Series event of the campaign, Ryder Cup qualification is still a possibility for several players. Defending champion Tyrrell Hatton is lurking high on the odds board but behind Viktor Hovland, who returns to Wentworth for the first time since 2019 as the betting favorite. A strong field of golfers offers up some tantalizing matchups. Visit BookMaker.eu for updated matchup odds when you’re ready to place a wager.

Need to Know

A strong field makes for some interesting matchups and I’ll do my best to make a few bucks. The West Course is one of three 18-hole courses at Wentworth Club, which has hosted this tournament every year since 1984. Recent renovations added yardage and numerous bunkers stretching the length to 7,267 yards and par 72. West is a tight, tree-lined course with tricky greens that were all modified before the 2017 tournament. There are a number of birdie opportunities and the field can gain strokes on the final two holes, which are manageable par-5s. The past three winners all scored -17 or better, something that was accomplished just twice in the previous 11 years.

BMW PGA Championship Matchup Picks

Tommy Fleetwood +105 vs. Matthew Fitzpatrick

It’s been an underwhelming season for Fleetwood, but he thrives in big-time environments and this is kinda big. He also showed signs that his game returned last week by grabbing a T2 in the Italian Open. He was hanging around the top of the leaderbaord last year until a closing 73 dropped him to T13. This is a course that should suit his game and the shot of confidence he got last week is enough to keep him ahead in this matchup.

Bernd Wiesberger -105 vs. Adam Scott

I continue to back Wiesberger for several reasons. First, he’s won me a lot of coin with his results over the last few years and also because he’s just a solid player. I was shocked with his meltdown on the 72nd hole in Switzerland a few weeks ago, but I expect the veteran to respond. Two of his eight ET titles are Rolex events and with a spot on the Ryder Cup team within his grasp with a strong showing I anticipate a good week. He’s had mixed results at Wentworth, but his season stats suggest he should navigate the layout far better than he has.

Christiaan Bezuidenhout +115 vs. Alex Noren

I was surprised to see Bezuidenhout at plus odds in this matchup, but considering his only competition over the last two months was in the Olympics and his results on the PGA Tour weren’t the best it wasn’t unexpected. He has only one top-10 in all his starts this year and the time off might actually do him good. This is after all the same player who posted back-to-back wins in the Alfred Dunhill Championship and South African Open at the end of last season. And he’s 2 for 2 at Wentworth with a solo third in 2019 giving me confidence to back him at this price.

Tyrrell Hatton -115 vs. Shane Lowry

I didn’t find any value backing the favorite so I went with the next best thing. This matchup featuring the next two on odds board has all kinds of intrigue. Both have huge wins in their careers, but Hatton gets the edge as the defending champ. Of course that doesn’t guarantee success and Hatton has just one top-10 in his last 13 starts worldwide. He has done well on the ET circuit though with a win, T6 and two other top-25s. And his dominance here last year stands out.

Henrik Stenson +115 vs. Branden Grace

Few players are hotter than Stenson right now and that’s enough to move me in his direction. And the plus odds price didn’t hurt. It had been a horrible season for the Swede until he broke a four-start MC streak with a T4 in the Czech Masters. He followed that with a solo third in the European Masters and was T15 last week. It’s been a nice run for the veteran who’s gone T17-T3-T7 in his last three starts at Wentworth.
