BMW PGA Championship Golf Odds

You can always tell the importance of a tournament by the quality of the players. That’s the case this week with a star-studded field off to Surrey, England and the Wentworth Golf Club for the European Tour’s BMW PGA Championship, the third Rolex Series event of the season. This prestigious competition brings out the best on the Euro circuit and with Ryder Cup qualification still in play there is plenty at stake. Viktor Hovland returns to Wentworth as the betting favorite ahead of defending champion Tyrrell Hatton and former Open champ Shane Lowry. Odds Analysis

Christiaan Bezuidenhout +3005

A model of consistency this season, we don’t hear a lot about Bezuidenhout because he raised the bar so high for himself at the end of last year when he won the Dunhill Championship and South African Open in consecutive weeks. He hasn’t won since but he has played the weekend in all 11 starts this season making him a nice option in an alternate market, too. We haven’t seen him since the Olympics and I haven’t seen anything about limitations with his game, so I’m counting on the rest and a decent but short history at Wentworth coming into play. He was third here at 16-under in 2019.

Tommy Fleetwood +2003

Wouldn’t it be like Fleetwood to make a statement near the end of what has been a quiet season for him? His odds likely tumbled after last week’s T2 in the Italian Open. It was his best finish of the season and just his second top-5, so maybe the game has returned. He’s not the longest off the tee but that’s not a requirement at Wentworth and he’s proven that with three top-20s in his last six starts.

Sam Horsfield +6500

It’s time for Horsfield to reverse a trend at Wentworth and he’s playing well enough leading up to the tournament to do that. He was T6 in the Cazoo Open a few months back and has a T15 and T23 in his last three starts missing out on a better finish with one crappy round in each event. He couldn’t overcome a second-round 73 in the Italian Open and a closing 75 in the Czech Masters prevented a higher finish. Still, he has eight top-10s this season and won twice last year, so you know he has the game and the price is right for a rebound after an MC here last year.

Ian Poulter +2503

Poulter is one player whose Ryder Cup chances get a boost with a strong showing. He’s been consistent on the PGA Tour with a T3 in the Schwab and a T10 in the WGC St. Jude moving him into the FedExCup playoffs. He was bounced, however, after a T31 in The Northern Trust. His last start on the ET resulted in a T4 in the Scottish Open when he closed with a 63. And he’s probably played this event more times than anybody in the field with a T5 last year.

Bernd Wiesberger +4000

Sitting in the same boat as far as the Ryder Cup goes, Wiesberger would benefit from a win. And it’s not like he hasn’t done that before with eight ET titles on his resume, including two Rolex Series wins. He’s still kicking himself from a meltdown on the 72nd hole in Switzerland that cost him a win and I expect as a veteran he’ll put that behind him and work on the task at hand. Results are mixed at Wentworth with a T15 his best in the last six starts, but his stats suggest a better result and a ticket to the Ryder Cup is the carrot at the end of the stick.

Course: Wentworth Golf Club – 7,267 yards, Par 72

One of three 18-hole courses at the Wentworth Club, the West Course has hosted every edition of this event since 1984. At just under 7,300 yards, the layout is a stiff test and is open to all types of players, as past champions have shown. The previous three winners scored 17-under or better. Recent tweaks to the layout have made it tougher to play with additional yardage and upwards of 30 bunkers added. The fairways are tight and lined with trees which can pose a problem if accuracy is an issue. However, a number of the holes can yield birdies and players can make up strokes on the final two holes, which are manageable par-5s. Hitting greens in regulation is a proven stat with eight of the last 10 winners ranking among the best in the field.
