First played in 1989, the BMW International Open returns to the rotation after being cancelled last year due to COVID. It was the only game in town until a few years ago when another high-end German automaker joined the fray. Still, this event is near and dear to the hearts of many on the European Tour which is why we have another stellar field pegging it up at Golfclub Munchen Eichenried despite taking place after the U.S. Open. Fresh off his second straight runner-up finish in a major, Louis Oosthuizen headlines the field, but it’s Viktor Hovland who tops the odds board. The top four on the odds list along with a number of other players make the trek to Munich from the coast of California creating a strong lineup and enticing matchup odds at BookMaker.eu.

Need to Know
Opened in 1989 Golfclub Munchen Eichenried is still a relatively new course. But the track underwent a huge renovation prior to the 2019 edition. The surfaces of all 18 greens changed with some slope added. The layout is straightforward with trees lining the generous fairways to provide a little opposition off the tee. The four par-5s are all reachable in two shots providing scoring opportunities and we routinely saw winning scores in the -20 range. The most challenging stretch is the closing three holes with the par-5 18th being probably the most difficult. Andrea Pavan bested Mathew Fitzpatrick in a playoff in 2019 after the two completed 72 holes at 15-under.
BMW International Open Matchup Picks
Martin Kaymer -108 vs. Thomas Pieters
If Kaymer is going to turn things around this is the time and place to do it. He’s one of a few natives in the field and a return to the Motherland should be inspiring. He certainly needs something to go right after a miserable last several weeks that saw him miss three consecutive cuts before playing the weekend at Torrey Pines. He was exceptional in the middle rounds last week only to be undone by a closing 73 that dropped him to T26. Kaymer has had success in this event with a win in 2008 and four additional top-20s. He’s also experienced some failure which is why his price is where it is.
Calum Hill -125 vs. Eddie Pepperell
Getting to the weekend is half the battle and Hill has been pretty good at that making the cut in all but two of his starts this season. He’s a relative newcomer to the Euro Tour but has handled himself well and should only get stronger as he continues to play. And it’s not like he isn’t used to winning. He won three times on the Challenge Tour, including two titles in a three tournament stretch in 2019. I was hesitant to back him at this price, but he should excel in this event.
Sam Horsfield +113 vs. Antoine Rozner
Horsfield is another cut maker playing through in all seven tournaments this season with six top-25s. Put him in a regular Euro Tour event and he’s been even better with three top-10s and nothing worse than T21 in five starts. He should be well rested after taking the last two weeks off and his stats in critical areas for this course are among the best on Tour. At plus odds I’ll definitely take my chances Horsfield winning this matchup.
Bernd Wiesberger +128 vs. Sergio Garcia
I’ve backed Wiesberger a lot over the last few years and more times than not he’s come through for me. Spending a lot of time this year on the PGA Tour hasn’t yielded the desired results but it has made the Austrian a stronger player. And catching him at this price is a plus. He left San Diego early after missing the cut, getting a head start on a number of players, including his matchup partner. After missing the cut at last month’s PGA Championship he returned to the ET the following week winning the Made in HimmerLand. Can he do it again?
Louis Oosthuizen -101 vs. Viktor Hovland
Backing Oosthuizen in this matchup last week would have been a winner. But that was last week. It might be too early to back the South African after yet another runner-up finish in a major. Oosthuizen fell one-shot behind Jon Rahm at Torrey Pines getting beat by a pair of insane birdie putts. But Louis is used to this by now since it’s the sixth time he’s finished second. He’s good enough to scare the eventual winner but has a hard time closing. This week should be different, though, and I’m counting on it.
