Odds Analysis

Tommy Fleetwood +650

Fleetwood is a deserving favorite this week, but there is always a concern of a letdown. The good news for Fleetwood is that this field is not that great and history has shown that a player can do well in the U.S. Open and then win this event the following week, as Ernie Els finished fourth at the U.S. Open in 2013 and then won this event.

Sergio Garcia +1050

I don’t know what to make of Sergio. He was nowhere to be found last week at the U.S. Open and he really hasn’t played well lately. He has played this event well including a tie for 5th two years ago. I am leery of taking him because his current form is so poor.

Andy Sullivan +1550

Sullivan is playing well of late and he might be worth a look at these odds. He has played this event three times and improved each time, with a tie for 21st in 2016. I give him a chance to contend this week.

Thobjorn Olesen +2250

Olesen missed the cut at the U.S. Open but that is not that big a deal considering the Shinnecock course was a mess. Olesen won the Italian Open earlier this season and he played well in this event two years ago with a second place finish.

Thomas Pieters +2550

I really like Pieters as a solid longshot this week. He didn’t make the U.S. Open so he will be ready and raring to go this week. I think he should be the second choice in the betting behind Fleetwood.

Chris Wood +3250

I give Wood a chance at big odds this week. He has played well on this course isn the past with three top 35 finishes including a third place finish.

Lucas Bjerregaard +3250

Another longshot for me this week is Bjerregaard who is in fine form of late. He didn’t play well in Italy but that may just have been a letdown. I expect him to be in the mix this week.

Thomas Detry +5500

My final longshot is Detry who finished second in this event a year ago. He has made nine of his last 11 cuts and he could make a run at the title this year.

Course: Golf Club Gut Larchenhof gets the hosting duties this year, as the BMW International Open rotates between Golfclub Munchen Eichenried and Golf Club Gut Larchenhof and it’s the latter which has hosting duties this week. The Gut Larchenhof course was designed by Jack Nicklaus and it is par 72 that measures 7,229 yards. Water is in play on half of the holes but scoring is actually pretty easy, as the winning scores have been as high as -19 in 2014 and -17 two years ago.
