Cazoo Open Golf Matchups

The European Tour returns to a familiar location for the first playing of the Cazoo Open, though it’s not the first event. Formerly known as the Wales Open, the tournament was an addition to the COVID schedule last year, making its first appearance on Tour in six years. Historic Celtic Manor Resort in Newport, Wales hosted consecutive events last year with Romain Langasque winning the Wales Open and Sam Horsfield claiming the Celtic Classic. Horsfield is back among the favorites behind Matt Wallace on the betting board with a majority of the field quite familiar with the treacherous track. Following The Open Championship there is a drop off in the talent pool giving punters a chance to make some coin on tournament matchups Visit BookMaker.eu for a complete list of matchup odds when you’re ready to place a wager.

Need to Know

The TwentyTen course at Celtic Manor made a return to the European Tour in a big way last year hosting consecutive events. The joint got its name for hosting the 2010 Ryder Cup and also hosted the Wales Open from 2000-2014 before getting back in the rotation. The 7,354 yard layout hasn’t changed from last year so the field knows what to expect. Still, most had a hard time adjusting with Langasque finishing at 8-under for the win. With five of the last seven Wales Open winners finishing a single-digit under par, the layout has proven to be a strong test. And the elements always come into play. It’s a typical links-style design over the first third with water coming into play on the middle holes. And other than a reachable par-4 15th the finish is a test.

Cazoo Open Matchup Picks

Calum Hill -113 vs. Matthew Jordan

This is a good spot for Hill to get back on track with his game seemingly a fit for this layout. After a rough start in last year’s Wales Open he was brilliant, all things considered, over the final 36 holes to claim a T8. Hill is accustomed to winning taking three titles in a 12-month span on the Challenge Tour and he’s performing above average in many of the key statistical categories that suggest a strong showing this week.

Sam Horsfield +125 vs. Matt Wallace

Recent results don’t ignite much confidence in Horsfield, which is why he’s priced where he is. But remember, he navigated Celtic Manor to 16-under to win the Celtic Classic last year doubling up the score of Langasque -8 at the Wales Open. Granted the conditions were much better and a number of players bettered the score of the Wales champ, but nobody was better than Horsfield. Returning to a track he likes has me backing Horsfield, and the price is darn good, too.

Daniel van Tonder +106 vs. Connor Syme

Going with another favorable underdog I’m counting on van Tonder using his distance to separate from the pack. Let’s not forget that DVT was seventh at the halfway point of The Open when the pressure of being in contention for a major championship likely hit him. With a more relaxed atmosphere this week we’ll see the player who won the Kenya Classic in March with a number of promising finishes on the Challenge Tour.

Laurie Canter -114 vs. Jordan Smith

One of the top ball-strikers on Tour, Canter can also knock the snot out of it off the tee setting him up for a big week. He was on top of his game last year leading to a top-5 and that was with some shoddy approach play. He’s been unable to put things together at the same time recently, but that doesn’t devalue his worth. Back on a course he had so much success on I expect Canter to get dialed back in and not only win this matchup but contend for the outright as well.

John Catlin -105 vs. Matthew Southgate

Catlin is excited that he doesn’t have to play a full 18 on a links course. Obviously not a fan after MCs in the Scottish Open and The Open Championship, Catlin should feel more at ease this week which has me leaning his way in this matchup. Earlier this year he produced a win at the Austrian Open and was fifth in the Canary Islands, so you know he can play. And he’s one of the top players in the field ranked 97th in the OWGR. He was good here last year claiming a top-10 and I expect the game will come around.
