The name has changed thanks to the deep pockets of a new corporate sponsor, but the venue and history remain intact for this week’s Cazoo Open. Formerly the Wales Open, the tournament returned to the reimagined schedule last year after a few years on hiatus. Romain Langasque captured the title in 2020 making a trip around historic Celtic Manor Resort at 8-under. The TwentyTen Course played host to consecutive tournaments last year thanks to COVID so most of the field is familiar with the layout. Following The Open Championship we have a less than stellar field ready to peg it up with Matt Wallace hitting the board as the betting favorite. Justin Harding, Sam Horsfield and Aaron Rai the only other players listed at shorter than 20/1. Visit BookMaker.eu for a complete list of betting odds when you’re ready to place a wager.

Odds Analysis
Calum Hill +2800
Hill looks to get back on track after disappointing showings in the Scottish and Irish Opens. He’s not far removed from a run of four top-12s in six starts and the two most recent results are out of character for him. Hill had a nice run to a top-10 at last year’s Wales Open with Celtic Manor seemingly a good fit for his game. The price isn’t where I’d like it to be, but Hill has a history of bouncing back after subpar outings. And I’m betting on him doing that this week.
Sam Horsfield +1400
Horsfield is another player who likes the terrain at Celtic Manor and it should support his game far better than Royal St. George’s and the Renaissance Club. Prior to those last two starts and a WD from the Irish Open, Horsfield was playing fantastic golf reaching the weekend in all eight starts since the beginning of the year with four top-10s and another T15. Oh, he also won the Celtic Classic played on this track last year shooting 18-under.
Aaron Rai +1600
One of two players in the field to place among the top-20 at The Open, Rai made his way back into the top-100 in the world rankings with his T19 at Royal St. George’s. That was his second best finish in his last eight starts and could be what jumpstarts his season. I typically don’t back the favorites as I’m searching for better value in the outright market, but Rai is a past winner on Tour and he looked confident last week going 4-under over the last three rounds.
Connor Syme +4000
The 54-hole leader in both events held here last year, Syme is looking for a different end result. He finished with a T3 and T8 going 15-under in the Celtic Classic that included a blistering third round 63. There must be something about this venue that strikes a chord with Syme since he hasn’t been close to matching those results. He did grab a top-20 a few starts ago and played the weekend in his two outings missing out on the big finish to get a win.
Daniel van Tonder +5000
A more relaxed atmosphere could benefit van Tonder this week. He was seventh at the midway point of The Open only to struggle over the back half as I’m sure the pressure mounted. His distance off the tee should allow him to contend and his poor play around the greens won’t be exposed as much here. He picked up a win in March at the Kenya Classic followed by a co-runner-up on the Challenge Tour. The experience of contending in a major should only help his game and his price this week is to my liking.
Course: Celtic Manor Resort – 7,354 yards, Par 71
Home to a resort hotel and 54 holes of golf, Celtic Manor has been a staple on the European Tour since hosting a pair of events last August. The course plays 7,354 yards at par 71 and hosted the 2010 Ryder Cup and the Wales Open from 2008 to 2014 before getting back in the rotation. It’s a combination of nine holes from the old Wentworth Hills layout and nine new holes. The layout comes at players from all directions with a typical links-style design over the first third. Water is featured on the middle holes and outside a reachable par-4 15th the finish is a test. Five of the last seven Wales Open winners on this track were single-digits under par, a good example of how difficult the course can be.
